I've been on a very high dose of oxycodone for 6 months, and can't come off it myself. I am seeing the doc today and they may give me a choice between the two..which one would you choose and why?

Suboxone.

Depending on what dosage of oxycodone you were at, it will likely be easier to taper down with Suboxone (buprenorphine) than with methadone.

YMMV, however.

Agree ^^^^^ +1^^^^^ Start @ 8 mg's if possible You will realize how good it really works. But dont stay at that dose, when you start to feel w/d again take 6 mg's a (try to wait 36-48 hours, only if it is possible) - couple days later - 4mg. Try to get your dose down between 1-2 mg's It is the only way to make progress w/ Bupe' The good feeling you will get the first day will never come back unless you taper down to a mg. Then it's up to you to quit altogether.

it's always better to try something different espcially if your tolerance becomes too big, it will allow you to decrease tolerance to oxy and taper for a bit.

I just want to get out of the game for good..I've lost all my money and most of my friends due to chemicals. I just want to live my life drug free but my body won't do it by itself.

thanks for the advice

I think it depends on the case of addiction, but Suboxone/Subutex is generally superior to methadone for a range of reasons, one of the largest being methadone is harder to kick. Also, buprenorphine (Suboxone/Subutex) is considered generally more stimulating than methadone, which has a reputation of being very sedating. Also, if you dose methadone once daily, you may get antsy when it is time for your next dose, and methadone is often dosed once daily. With buprenorphine, often it is to be taken more than once daily. Buprenorphine can also be used by a variety of routes of administration. It can be taken sublingually, intranasally, intrarectally (I suppose), and IV. I wouldn't suggest IV, but if you are IV'ing your oxy, it may be more appealing to IV the buprenorphine. Also, buprenorphine is a partial-antagonist as you likely know so it will block the effects of other opiates and help with cravings, methadone will simply dull down the effects of other opiates due to its strength as a full-agonist.

You can kick with literally one 8mg suboxone pill. they just don't want you to know that.

when i'm up to 80mg oxymorphone a day this is what i do. step straight onto the sub (snorting it; works better) but even the first time only do 2mg MAX less works too. and then just do super tiny .05 mg bumps for like 3 days (to get over the full agonist w/d). Then i do like 2 roxis a day for a day or 2 (cause sub is grimy and the roxi rewires me off that trash but isn't strong enough to get me dependent) and bam no longer physically dependent.

mentally it is another story however

Alex is basically spot on. I'm on my 6th day clean and my 5th time doing so - You want to go with Subutex/suboxone.

I'm on my 6th day clean today from a 4 year binge on opiates. 2.5 years of dope and 1.5 of pills. I've been clean 4x and this is # 5. I don't know it all, but I can say "I've been there and done that" more than a few times....

It really depends on your willpower really. Suboxone/Subutex is better if you have the will power to quit. You can lower your own dose and you can get off of them yourself. Methadone is usually heavily watched by a doctor or clinical doc and it is hard to get off of. Suboxone is meant for short term recovery of opiate addiction (6 months if done correctly, I've gotten myself clean off of 2 weeks of subs though, and no withdraws what-so-ever)

Methadone on the other hand, depending on if liquid or the bisquits, can be a bit of a challenge. Methadone is more for people who can't or don't have the will power to get clean. Your dosage usually drops 1mg per week after 1 years time if you are on the liquid. If you drop 5 or more you will end up hurting pretty bad. You'll be doing the mattress roll like you are sick, and you'll be in a lot of pain. Subs on the other hand, if you decide to decrease your dosage on your own, you can easily cut yourself from 2 subs/day to 1/2 sub/day in about a weeks time and still not feel sick.

Methadone is more long term, suboxone is (meant to be) a shorter term maintenance pill. Again, you can snort the subs, but sub-lingual (under your toungue) absolutely works the best no matter what anyone says. That's how they are supposed to be taken. Also, if you are getting clean you need to get out of the habit of shooting or snorting, so once again, I recommend you take the subs as they were meant to be taken. Addiction is not only to the drug, but the method at which it is administered as well.

Go for the subs. You'll never regret it. And no matter how hard days 1 & 2 are, keep going. 4, 5, 6, and 7 are cake walks and you're back to normal life again.

Reconsider Methadone at all costs. Its one of the dirtiest opiate/oids I have ever taken. It can make your addiction worse. I will tell you going to a clinic nothing is worse than cold flashes and chills in the Snowy shitty cold. If you dont use a Needle and 200mgs of OC is a high dose just do Subutex and then go on Suboxone if you want. 6 months is not terribly long but if you are a pain patient then I would really think. I have a major issue with doctors giving out methadone for fucking Pain. Thats such a set up imho no offense to anyone

And I agree with that as well ^ dr's giving methadone for pain is the most horrible idea ever. It is only good since they can't abuse other pain pills in the mean time. That's the only reason I can think of it.

And what you may want to do, is actually do the suboxone first since it blocks the use of opiates, you won't get high even if you tried. The subutex is hard to get high on, but it is possible. I'd start with the suboxone first as to not slip up, and then subutex for maintenance once you start losing the cravings on a day-to-day basis.

agree with lptrax

i spent 4 years on the methadone program @ 205mg/day

For the OP I've only tried Suboxone a couple of times (recreationally), always snorted though I've used methadone recreationally as well. Besides Suboxone being more upbeat/stimulating and methadone more sedating, methadone is a much stronger opioid since it hits all the opioid receptors suboxone only partially which is why there is no ceiling dose for methadone but there is for suboxone. I personally met at the clinic a guy who was taking 600mg methadone/day. Methadone also clouds up your mind more so than suboxone (esp memory wise) and is an all around heavy drug, also harder to get off from than suboxone.

Depends on how strong your addiction is. I think methadone should only be used when and if byprenorfin has been tried and found "too weak". Also, methadone kind of clouds you and usually makes you gain weight in the long run. I was on it for 10yrs and then switched to suboxone. I "found" myself again and also lost 20 kg's :)

There's really no difference between suboxone and subutex since the naloxone is the suboxone gets "out competed" by the buprenorphine anyway. The buprenorphine in suboxone and/or subutex will block other opiates the same way, considering you are on the same dose of either one.

Since subutex has generics and is therefore cheaper, you may look into being prescribed the subutex instead of suboxone if money is an issue. The subutex will block other opiates from working, the same way that suboxone does.

You are somewhat correct yes. If you are taking normal dosing @ 2 full 8mg pills/day (or more) as prescribed by a doctor, yes you are definitely 100% correct. BUT, the thing of it is, is not a lot of people decide to do a couple weeks or months at 2 pills a day. Sometimes people take 1 suboxone just to make it through the single day till they can pick up their dope tomorrow. In lower doses is where it matters more, they will both cover the receptors in your brain but don't get things mixed up, buprenorphine is an opiod, the naloxone in suboxones is an antagonist. The naloxone is a large reason why even with small doses you won't get high afterwards, where with subutex you will. Subutex has semi-antagonist effects, but it isn't. It just covers the receptors that the opiates usually cling to.

While it might be true if you are doing 16mg's of bupe/day for 2 weeks or more it will be the same whether it be suboxone or subutex, under 8mgs, subutex and suboxone are quite different if done in a single day. It depends on dosing and time span.

^ The buprenorphine is an agonist/antagonist too, so I don't get what you mean. Plenty of people abuse suboxone and get high the same day they take 1mg, and some people even report being able to get higher when they take another opiate on top of a very low dose of suboxone.
