To produce slightly orange crystals of Bupe + Naloxone
I did a workup tonight, as I often do when I have something new which I haven't done a workup on yet... 8 mg Suboxone pills. I know the latest craze is the strips, but, I don't have them, thus, couldn't do a workup. Pill extractions are a hobby of mine, I really enjoy doing them, it's like a puzzle to me, and I freaking love puzzles. Haven't had a pill that could beat me yet!!
For my pill workup, I didn't do a full dye extraction, meaning there is still some color in the finished product, even after a dual solvent re-crystallization.
The end product here is pure Bupe. with Naloxone. There is some orange color in the crystals, but, other than that, it's pure. I tried a few old tricks to remove all of the dye to no avail. It's one strong orange, I'll tell you that. Damn.
This product can be safely IV'd, there is no need for a Whatman with this. I have Whatmans .22 um filters but don't bother with this. It can also be snorted, etc. (I know you guys have official terms for how it's ingested, so, feel free to share and chime in, thanks.
This is very useful, personally, I've been using it for years as a form of Naloxone, there have been times where I felt a little too high, and this totally took the edge off. It's a very beneficial drug, it's also nice to use to take a vacation from opiates for awhile. This is a very good thing to do for everyone in my opinion. I enjoy the breaks too, I enjoy both actually.
Anyway, onto the extraction:
First the extraction consists of 2 steps, the initial extraction with Methanol and the second step which is a dual solvent re-crystallization to purify the product. The entire procedure can be easily done and without the use of any glassware. I'm in this boat as well since I don't have any glassware to worry about. It's much smarter to keep away from glass because of all the mess it can cause...
So, many will ask "Methanol?", well, it's very OTC in the states, and it's very easy to get 100% with no lubricants or other adulterants. It is also perhaps the most superior extraction reagent known in my opinion. This is based on it's use in dozens of extractions. It's action is very fast, and it's very clean, just don't ingest it, not even a tiny bit.
There is an over the counter gas line de-icer called Splash in a yellow bottle, find it, and look up the MSDS number on the bottle and see for yourself, it's 100% methanol. Do not buy the most popular one, I think it's called HEET or something like that, it's 99.5% pure with a small amount of lubricants. Now, once you obtain your methanol, put a few drops on a mirror and evaporate. It should leave nothing behind. This is how you can be sure.
For all the naysayers out there who don't realize that even though it says "Gas DeIcer" in the bottle, and don't realize that Methanol is a perfectly safe solvent and evaporates cleanly, and that said solvent is used in the "Gas Deicer", all I can say is read the MSDS. This is not a dig, I understand the thought of using Gas DeIcer sounds scary. If you only know how much this same Deicer is used in the manufacturer of many of your favorite things, you would really freak out. I'm not digging on anyone, just saying that no matter how scary the label may look, it's what's inside that counts. Properly handled, this reagent is perfectly safe. Unless you ingest it, then your on your own man, it only takes like 30cc or so to kill you. As an old man once told me about the difference between Ethyl and Methyl Alcohol (ethanol and methanol), he said, "You can mess with Ethyl, but, not with Methyl!!!". He was making a funny reference about how it is safe to consume Ethanol (Beer, Wine, etc) but not Methanol (Racing fuel, Gas Line DeIcer, Poisoning your husband). Anyway enough said on that one.
For the hyper-vigilant, go ahead and do a general distillation, it'll come over around 65 deg C. No, I'm not going to show you how to do a ghetto distillation, google for that one.
Once you've obtained the pure Methanol, it's time to begin.
1) First you will need a small glass (At least 30cc in size), like a shot glass or something similar. Finely crush 4 pills and place them into the glass.
2) Add 20CC of Methanol
3) Stir very well and place glass on Coffee Maker warmer and turn warmer on. Let it heat up for 15 minutes.
4) After the 15 minutes has gone by, stir again, let it sit 5 and proceed to the next step.
5) Using a coffee filter or 2 make a filter. You can do this by placing the filters over the opening of a cup, pressing down in the center and putting rubber bands around the edges. The bands are optional, I usually just sit the filter into the cup and press down to make a little filter cup which I can pour liquids into.
6) Filter your solution. Wash with warm methanol 10CC and collect all the filtrates together into one cup.
Next step is to evaporate your solution. I'll show you 2 ways, the fast way, and the slow way. The slow way is best because it guarentees no loss of product.
Fast way:
1) place the cup into a frying pan with about 1/2-3/4" of water. Warm the pan, until the water begins to boil.
2) put the glass with the solution into the center of the pan.
3) keep your eye on the water level in the pan and add more as necessary.
4) remove cup and pan from heat as soon as the methanol has evaporated.
Slow way:
1) pour Methanol into a small plate.
2) Evaporate the methanol.
Within an hour or so, all the methanol will have evaporated with the fast way, and about 24 hours the slow way.
Scrape out the dried Bupe. powder and collect it.
*** At this point you have crude Bupe, you can use this as you like, for IV, definitely use a Whatman to be safe even though the solids do not dissolve in methanol... So, I guess it's a matter of opinion. Personally, I say use a Whatman.
If you want to purify, do a dual solvent crystallization. You can find this procedure anywhere on the net, but, I'll run through it real quick for you.
Get a pyrex glass that you can heat.
Add just enough methanol to the Bupe. as is needed to fully dissolve it.
Remove heat, and add 5x the amount of methanol of Acetone and cover and place in the fridge.
A couple hours later nice crystals will form of Bupe. and Naloxone. Filter them off by siphoning off the methanol with a filter tube. Dry and enjoy!
