Suboxone - Do opiates block the ANALGESIC effects?

I've been on Suboxone maintenance for about a year and at 2mg. I possibly may be prescribed an opiate from a dentist and wondering if it will block the analgesic effects? I'm well aware that it blocks all euphoric effects and all that $h!t but when given a pain medicine I really need it to work for the pain, not looking to get high. I have about four teeth in horrific pain that from most likely a nasty amount of cavities. I can't eat/drink anything cold or hot. Ibuprofen works very little. I'm having a meeting before getting my teeth done on a later date so will ask him then. I need to know. Thanks!

Euphoric and analgesic effects are inseparable when using opiates. Both effects are mediated by mu so I'm afraid the analgesia will be blunted significantly.

Perhaps explain your situation to the dentist and they they could instead Rx you a stronger NSAID.

opiates will NOT work to kill your pain while on subs. bup has a 36 hour half life.

if you are on subs and NEED pain management, you may have to be given higher doeses of suboxone (though I would request Subutex!!) Or you will have to be given something that isn't an opiate. Or you can take a break from your subs for several days. Bear in mind that 90% of all withdrawal symptoms from subs is MENTAL! (not proven, but seems to hold true for me.. mind over matter!)

I've actually gone off Suboxone for three days and the worse withdrawals I suffered were insomnia and mild-moderate muscle pain. Nothing severe. I went back on because it wasn't the right time, I'll be off it again very soon.

Thanks for the replies guys, I may just tell them that I'm on Suboxone for back pain, not addiction...I know BS but people look at you different when your an addict and get something like a strong NSAID or possibly Tramadol.

I don't know about the suboxone thing... but when I get dental work done I SWEAR by 800mg ibuprofen. Around thanksgiving I got a tooth removed by a dentist that used the hammer and chisel method. Perhaps mixing the hydro or oxy that you get with ibuprofen will help alot...

Definatly tell your dr you're on the sub for back pain, that way you can get adequate relief!

Your dr will most likely script you ibuprofen 400 or 800 and either vicodin or percocet... Mine gives hydro 10/325, ibupofen 400 and promethazine. It worked really well. I hate dental work!! Good luck!

Tramadol probably wouldn't work either, given that it binds to the same mu receptors. NSAIDs are your best bet, or maybe try and solve the problem yourself with pot.

no doctor in his right mind is going to believe you are scripted subs for back pain, sorry but they just know better, subs are shit when it comes to pain relief and it's pretty much only used for opiate addiction, there have been rare cases it's been scripted for pain but I'm not sure why being that it's about as good as tylonol when it comes to analgesia

For some reason Tramadol goes nice with Suboxone.

Well, tramadol does get around the opiate blocking properties of the sub, so that is a possible option to consider.

I have to agree though that the NSAIDs are the best route to go. Most dental pain comes from swelling and inflammations, so those medicines often best fit the bill.

nsaids can help, I take diclofenac which seems to help pretty well.

Unfortunately your going to get a weak opiate which won't beat out the suboxone, however, I switch back and forth between sub/heroin always within a day and never run into problems with half life, but i get strong dope and purposly take under 6mg of sub. If you stopped for 3 days and were fine, you could stop and take whatever else you get, but depending on the dose it might not do anything.

You could ask your Dr for a higher sub dose, which may help if you are on a low dose of sub, but going from 8 to 16 or whatever might not do anything.

Best advice given your situation: Stop taking sub for a few days until the dentist, then take those opiates. If they work, great + no withdrawal, if they are too weak then either take more or switch back to the subs + you will have some sub saved up so you can take a higher dose.
