My doctor has been telling me about a suboxone implant, that goes into the arm, and releases the desired amount automatically, daily. I think its a 3 month period. He may put me on this. Does anyone know anything about this?

I remember reading about the clinical studies a couple of years ago (the product was called probuphine), but as far as I know the FDA has not approved them yet.

I'll check into that further...

edit - Yeah, the product is not available yet but the clinical trials look good thus far and best estimates for FDA approval is late 2012.

a friend of mine who lives in the bronx, was paid to be part of the clinical trials in manhatten. however, he didnt mention anyone getting it in their arm... it was placed in his lower abdomen, near the appendix and right kidney.

the first month or so, he was kept there inpatient, for observation. then they discharged him, and he had to report back 4 times a week at the scheduled times, to receive his payment at the end of the trial.

after he realized they werent really drug testing him, he started occasionally using heroin again.

long story short, the withdrawls still came, and he was sure the 'pellet' they inserted, was long gone within 8 weeks.

he ended up being honest with them, and still received his $3,300 i believe, at the end of the trial.

reading his report later, they blamed his experience with 'the metabolism of a healthy young male'.

this guy is not a healthy young male. you ever read 'the junkie' by jack kerouc? or see those 20something streetkid junkies with vintage clothes and beatles haircuts who hang out near grand central and union square? yea, hes one of those....

he said the pellet insertion would only be effective for people who, like, get caught selling there suboxone/subutex script for dope money.

now that i think about it... i guess that means itd be effective for a good percentage of people. damn, nevermind. 8)

So your friend is one of those hipsters? I usually see them in Williamsburgh.

Are you sure that it was the suboxone implant that your friend did this trial for? Because there is the naltrexone implant, which is a pellet that they put in your lower abdomen.

Phase III trials are currently underway, and should be done early next year. Sounds like an interesting option for buprenorphine delivery!!

Since this has been answered, I'm going to go ahead and close this up.
