hi all. i'm prescribled 12mg of suboxone a day, but normally i snort between 6-10mg a day. i have rly bad anxiety but my sub doc says most docs wont prescribe benzos with suboxone anymore. when i was on suboxone years ago i was also prescribed klonopin AND ativan at the same time! anywho, i keep hearing how dangerous it supposedly is to mix suboxone and benzos, but i used to be on 65mg of methadone a day and i used to take 2-6mg of xanax with it quite often and had no problems. i managed to recently get my hands on some .5mg xanax and was tempted to take a few to take the edge off the next time i get an anxiety attack but im a lil worried what with all the mixing subs and benzo warnings. is it REALLY that dangerous? should i not risk it? from my perspective it cant be nearly as lethal as a mixture as dones and xanax...but i guess whats lethal for some might not be lethal for others. i have a HUGE tolerance to opiates, and a fairly tame tolerance to benzos. i was thinking maybe taking 1mg of xanax a few hrs after my 8mg dose of subs...but i was also wondering if me snorting the subs makes a difference with the cocktail? i know snorting em makes it enter the bloodstream faster and whatnot, i dont get high from snorting em i just do it for the BA so i dont have to take as much. any help or advice would be GREATLY appreciated. thanks all!

It's dangerous for those who do not have tolerances to either one.

You will be fine with .5-1mg/therapeutic doses of Xanax. But even for a tolerant person, overdoing will get you in trouble. IMO, Suboxone is not quite as dangerous as Methadone when it comes to benzos, but moderation is always key. Suboxone is a very potent opiate.

I used xanax quite a few times, while on a daily, prescribed dose of suboxone. I never had any issues - but it's definitely incredibly dangerous to take this combo without tolerance. I didn't have a tolerance at the time with xanax, but I did for opiates. I don't think it's ever a *safe* combination, but certainly if you have a tolerance to the suboxone and take a relatively small dose of xanax, you'll probably be ok. Especially if you stay active / awake.

In a way you're right about suboxone not being as dangerous as methadone; far more people overdose and die on the methadone/xanax combination than with bupe. However, bupe does carry one severe risk; it has a higher MU receptor binding affinity than naloxone - which means if you *do* over dose, it can be very difficult to be treated. The usual naloxone injection given to overdose victims may not be effective at all. And, like methadone - it lasts for a very long time too; meaning the overdose can continue for a very long time.

But all that said - I never had an issue taking up to 2mg of xanax, without a tolerance to the xanax, while taking my daily dose of suboxone. But no one is going to declare it safe. If you can, make sure you do it while there are people around who are aware of what you have taken - for me, this has saved my life on more than one occasion.

I was trying to be careful with my wording because of bupe's incredible binding ability, and naloxone's lack of efficacy with when it comes to ODing but I couldn't figure out a way to say it. I know that you're 100% right. I was trying to give OP a safe yet a real answer. Speaking from my methadone clinic days. Once I got bored with maintenance, I started going crazy with benzos and at first 2-3mg of xanax with my morning 80mg of methadone would put me in the nod for hours. Once I switched to suboxone, I couldn't achieve the same effect with 2-3mg of xanax. Respiratory and overall CNS depression with 80mg of methadone was far greater than with 16mg of suboxone when combined with benzos.

I guess the safest advice would be unless your doctor deemed the benefit of mixing bupe with benzos greater than the risk, then you shouldn't be doing it at all.
