Opioids Suboxone and cross tolerance

if suboxone is an opioid how does it keep you from withdrawing. Like say I did heroin for a month straight, then take suboxone for a short time, why would I not withdraw afterwards? I guess I'm a little confused on how it works. It seems like it would just mask the withdraw symptoms until the sub is out of my system then start withdrawing again. Can anyone clear this up for me? Thanks

You're jsut replacing one opiate with another. Just like methadone is used for the same reason. Being on suboxone/methadone instead of heroin/oxy/whatever is sometimes better because people can function better and have normal lives when on these maintenance programs. They are still just as addictive and still have horrible withdrawals. An opiate is an opiate is an opiate.

Plus, suboxone/methadone has a much lower abuse potential and is not intended to get the user high (although it will for people who are low in tolerance).

See that's what I thought. I was under the impression that it kept you from withdrawing if you did a short detox

It doesn't really keep you for, withdrawing. It just makes the withdrawal a lot easier. And it works similarly to methadone in this regard. It fills the extra receptor sites created by the heroin,oxy,or other full agonist, and it stays on them a lot longer. And if you do a one week taper, even after the seventh day. There is still some buprenorphine in you, s it us. Long half life, so the body gradually withdraws, over time. I think bupe can be detected in urine,blood and feces for up to fourteen days after its last use.
