Does it seem like both are similar, if not identical? The only difference I can think of is that children are normally more hyper than one would be while high (the mind would be hyper with the latter, but certainly not the body). Otherwise, in my childhood (at least) I remember being able to immerse myself in most activities (prime example being video games), along with having weird and wonderful thoughts, which have lessened in adulthood.

I also distinctively being able to appreciate colours and sensations more as a child... I know that could obviously be due to the novelty factor, but what does cannabis do that relates to novelty?

i don't think there's much of a relation. After you smoke cannabis for years, it becomes second nature to you and there's nothing about the experience that is special or reminds me of childhood anyway. I can relate to what you are saying when i think about psychedelics though and it has been brought up many times.

if you are new to smoking cannabis then the states may be similar. I think as you get older you start to filter out more and more things in your life. When you are high these filters aren't as strong and more things pass through, your senses are more stimulated, kind of like when you are a kid. If you think about it, as you get older you've experienced the same things so many times that you don't pay attention to the details. When you are high you are more likely to pay attention to such things. As for the immersion into video games, that's just one of the great qualities of most drugs.
