Stupid doctor...

I have been having trouble sleeping lately, so I figured I could score some Ambien from my doctor. From all of the posts that I have read about Ambien, it sounded pretty cool. I made an appointment and went in after I got off work to see him. I told him that I was having trouble sleeping, and was also having anxiety attacks throughout the day. I also told him that two years ago I had taken 50mg of Zoloft every day for six months. I told him that this helped with my depression, but that it made me edgy, and made my anxiety attacks worse.
So, what does he tell me? He says that he is going to write me a prescription for some zoloft. Again I tell him that zoloft made me more edgy. I then told him that I have seen tv commercials for Ambien, and that I would like to try it. After I say this he just stares at me for a long time. Then he says, "Do you want me to just write you a script for Ambien, get the hell out of your way, and let you go get hooked on sleeping pills?"
Well, I was shocked by that. This doctor was turning into more of a bitch with every word he spoke. So me, not wanting to sound like some druggie looking for an easy score say, "no, of course that is not what I want. I just want something that will help me sleep, and zoloft is not what I need."
So, he looked me up and down several more times. Finally he took out his script pad and wrote me a prescription for 30 Elavil 50mg. He said that I should take these for a week, and that if they didn't help me sleep, that I should call him back and he would write me a prescription for Atarax, which I believe is just a really strong antihistamine.
So I am pretty pissed. After reading all of these posts about how easy it is to get Ambien, all I get is an antidepressant and an antihistamine. Any ideas as to how I could get anything better from this doctor, or should I just try my luck with another dr?

Ambien is officially intended to be used for no longer than one week, even though it's a "safe, non-addictive" sleeping pill.
The doctor wasn't an idiot. He was really smart. He tested you on the Zoloft thing. Then he went to mild sleeping pills. The point of sleeping pills is you don't take them for more than 2 weeks. They're just to get you on a new sleep cycle unless you're really fucked in the head, which usually requires paying your doctor several hundred if not up to a thousand dollars for him/her to say you're fucked in the head. Oops, did I say pay? I meant go visit them several times.
At any rate, you need to get a doctor who believes in over medicating. This guy seemed rational, which is not what you want in your case.

Your taking a tricyclic antidepressant for sleep. This will work. Like other antidepressants in this family, Amitriptyline brings with it a bunch of nasty side effects. Sedation is one of those side effects.
Be careful with it. These types of meds were popular years ago pre-zoloft and prozac. Back then they were known as suicide drugs. It's very easy to over-dose and die with'em.

Stupid because he wouldn't give you the recreational drug you wanted? Naaa, he was simply savvy to your game and you got owned... see, Elivil *will* put you to sleep, so don't even bother trying to go back to him and say it's not working, because I can assure you that after Atarax he has a number of other non-fun meds he can script you...

I have a persciption too! for ambien 10mg/30 a month(with like 8 refills) although I don't use these all the time. they are really good.
I basically use these for a couple days to a week in between opiate and benzos!
I do have one question for you - Phreex - or anybody else who might know......Will ambien build up your Benzo tolerance?
It seems like it is - Today I took some Klonopins - (2.5mgs) - and the effects aren't as good as the last time, I took them (1.5mgs). Which was over a week ago!
I took 15mgs of ambien Tuesday night!
On Monday night I took 60mls of Tussive/Hydrocodone - syrup
Would the opiate I took Monday contribute to this too!
Just wondering

I have learned from much experience that there are two factors involved in how you do at the doc. First is the type of doctor and his personal diatrabe on which meds should/shouldn't be prescribed. The other factor is the legitamacy of your problem. Having trouble sleeping not due to a recent crisis, depression, adhd, etc is pretty rare and generally only occurs in older people (geriatric). A lesser factor is that some doctors actually believe the hippocratic oath they took regarding, "first, do no harm."
