Student’s marijuana speech ends with flourish and trip to jail

ok, apparently this happened somewhere around tacoma, washington.

ppl who post these stories need to include this type of info somewhere in their posts.

My bad, I thought it was in the story. It happened at Peninsula high in Gig Harbor, Washington.

Ballsy kid, not the smartest move though, I mean a high school auditorium isn't the best stage to really get people debating, sure it might change the opinions of a few school kids and maybe even a faculty member or two lol. It isn't as if this is going to increase debate in Government or anything towards legalization.

The more people that speak up, the better. Dismissing activism as useless is very dangerous.

I didn't think you'd be allowed to write that sort of thing, I will write it next time I do a persuasive essay.

You can if it does not promote use. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morse_v._Frederick

^ He could of spoke up without lighting a joint though, I don't think I dismissed activism at all, just the effectiveness of this kids stunt.

It is one thing if a fucking politicians lights one up, thats a fucking protest, everyone knows plenty of highschool kids smoke dope, wow a student lit a doobie in class it isn't going to do anything. If his presentation was that great theres no reason he had to light it.

IMHO this kid is a dumb fuck, ballsy but fucking stupid. I mean this kid isn't even old enough to buy a pack of cigs....

^ that just means a criminal record means a lot less for him than if he WAS old enough to buy a pack of cigs

maybe he could show that, after smoking a marijuana joint, you don't go all crazy eyed and start killing people, or lay on the couch eating durritos

I disagree. He had a great presentation but the stunt brought the publicity. None of us would have heard about his presentation if he didn't spark up.

Teen in pot essay says he accepts consequences
By BRENT CHAMPACO News Tribune

"I have provided you with information, facts and statistical evidence that all point towards the legalization of marijuana," Ian Barry wrote in his essay. "But the truth is it doesn’t matter what I say until you, the people, stand up and besiege the government to re-address the litigation of marijuana."

TACOMA, Wash. — Ian Barry says he wasn’t trying to be a martyr when he lit a marijuana joint last week at Peninsula High School in Gig Harbor, nor was he trying to pull a stunt.

Simply put, the 17-year-old junior wanted to drive home the message of his persuasive essay: Marijuana doesn’t deserve its negative stigma and should be legalized.

On Friday, Barry told The News Tribune that he knew what the consequences would be for his bold tactics, but he was willing to accept them.

After his speech Tuesday, he was arrested and sent to Remann Hall juvenile detention center in Tacoma. He was expelled from school. (Read the essay here at the site of television station KIRO.)

He says he fully accepts his punishment. He faces misdemeanor charges of unlawful drug possession after police found the container that he carried the joint in and that contained marijuana residue. He also understands this will go on his record.

“I see myself as someone who holds himself to a high moral value,” Barry said.

The stunt, in which he smoked, then ate the joint, was celebrated among some of the teen’s peers but was frowned on to say the least by law enforcement officers and district administrators.

“We believe in freedom of speech and encourage it, but illegal activities are absolutely not going to be tolerated in our district,” school Superintendent Terry Bouck said.

Barry will meet with Peninsula administrators to determine whether he should be allowed to finish classes. He said the joint was key to making his point and starting a dialogue on the leglization of marijuana.

"As Sir Isaac Newton said, ‘Every action has an equal and opposite reaction,’ ” Barry said. “I don’t think there would have been another way I could have gotten this reaction.”

That kid's got mammoth sized balls. i wish i could have seen the reaction of the student body watching their fellow student get high

Man that would be a weird situation, standing infront of 150 people power toking a joint, not to mention being stoned as fuck afterwards while being escorted :p

I hope he gets an "A" for that presentation. Good thing his topic wasn't serial killers. :)

hahahaha

Seventeen years old, he was well aware of what he was going to do and the consequences of these actions. That's not "dumb" in my opinion.

To roughly summarize something Dr. Rick Doblin (MAPS.org) said in a interview, cannot recall which, "when parents realize their children are in more harm getting caught for drugs than doing the drugs itself we will start legalizing". In some cases it takes a bit of a extreme non-violent protest to wake people up, whether fellows students, parents, educational boards, or the whole government. I applaud him and admit I might not have been able to do the same myself.

He wrote a 15 page paper for a 2 page assignment and has a 3.7 gpa... I'm sure he wrote a good amount of the paper blazed. If this doesn't say something about the ability of stoners...

this goes to show that everyone who smokes isnt a lazy bastard. 3.7 is really high last time i checked. i wonder if he was an experienced pot head or just tried it a few times and got inspired?

""The stunt, in which he smoked, then ate the joint, was celebrated among some of the teen’s peers but was frowned on to say the least by law enforcement officers and district administrators.""

I wonder who else? Some misinformed parents?

^ He could of spoke up without lighting a joint though, I don't think I dismissed activism at all, just the effectiveness of this kids stunt.

And then it would be exactly the same as the other thousands of students who give reports on the legalization of marijuana.
