I have been suffering from frequent bouts of illness throughout the spring and summer. For a while I thought it was cotton fever or some other bacterial infection contracted through my abysmal injection practices (injecting drugs using the same cotton and spoon and same needle for a week or longer often being too lazy to even get a clean glass of water to use as injection water, instead using the same glass which has dust and dirt floating in it as well as old blood dissolved in it from dipping a bloody needle into it over the course of several day and doing all of this in my absolutely filthy room).

The symptoms of the illness are extreme sleepiness and high fever lasting anywhere from 8 hours to 10 days, with the symptoms fluctuating. Like I said, I believed it to be cotton fever or something of that nature and I began trying to wash my spoon and get a fresh cotton and fresh water at least twice a week to combat this.

However, after several months I noticed a pattern. I was never ill during the periods where I was using heroin, or suboxone. It did not matter how filthy my equipment was, I've even injected shots that have spilled on the floor and turned gray from absorbing so much dust and dirt and felt fit as a fiddle afterward. The sickness only happened when I was injecting hydromorphone pills and then it did not seem to matter whether or not I had cleans cottons, Id get sick regardless and then get well again as soon as I got some heroin even if I continued using the same needle I used with the hydromorphine without washing it.

To me this suggests there is something in those pills that is making me sick. THey are the yellow 4 mg ones that say P on one side and 4 on the other. Has anyone experienced a similar illness from these pills or does anyone have any idea what this is? I know the simple answer is just stop using hydromorphone and for the most part I have done that. However, I would still like to know what was happening to me.

Sounds like an allergy or intolerance. If given in a hospital setting or prescribed and you told a doctor about this they would say you have an allergy to it and avoid it. It isn't necessarily an allergy, but it at least an intolerance. They will refer to it as an allergy nonetheless. There is a chance it is caused by the metabolite, hydromorphone-3-gluconoride, though your symptoms seem a bit off.

Even if you went to a doctor or this was happening while you were being kept in a hospital, they would not know why it was happening. They will just avoid the drug that is causing the problem.

I know, but I am lazy and struggle with getting myself to do anything. It's been a major life issue for me, but especially the past 10 years. I spend most of my time in bed or in my room and only really leave the house to get food, drugs or go to church (I do believe in the Lord and go to church every week).

Over the years, I've injected all kinds of dirt and grime and filth into my veins and never gotten sick from it. I've injected spilled shots which I sucked up off my floor, which I never clean. I've even done things as stupid as scraping the top layer of filth off the top of my desk, dissolving it and shooting it because I knew that over the years I had spilled enough heroin that there had to be some, somewhere in all that dust and dirt and indeed, I did get some withdrawal relief from that shot.

These are the depths of depravity to which my life has taken me and it all happened because I became consumed with lessening my pain and because I just cannot handle being dopesick anymore, in any way shape or form. Even feeling a little dopesick, is so depressing for me that I will literally put my life in serious risk to obtain 30 minutes of relief. I am actually quitting opiates for this reason. The sickness part is so stupid and I just cant be bothered with it anymore and because I am too lazy to work, I never have the money for a steady supply. I am trying a new approach to pain now, facing it rather than running away. I think this holds promise, but I am not to the point where I am practiced enough to really live it as I should.

i'm sorry but you must be much more sterile in your IV practices

I agree. Most people are guilty of practicing some unsafe IV practices in rare cases when they are really sick, but doing that on the regular is bad news. You can't say that you've been doing this for a while without ill effects if you are now feeling sick for up to 10 days at a time after a shot. I don't know what it can be, but go to a doctor and have some bloodwork done, and get on subs or something man.

Maybe you're just going through withdrawals. Hydromorphone is incredibly short lasting, and withdrawals set in very soon. The symptoms you describe could easily be withdrawal
