For those of you that buy larger quantities of weed how do you store to keep it fresh? Would a cigar humidor work well or keep it a jar? I don't like bags because they air out and they dry the bud out.

From what I've gathered over reading this question on many different message boards/forums in addition to talking to many people over the past 9 years the 2 posters above me got it right; Mason jars are always what you hear people suggest. Personally, if I only have a couple grams or less I've used a pill bottle if it's not just in the sandwich bag it came in.

I used to store my weed in a tin, seemed to do the job.

I have heard of people storing there weed in glass jars and heard its quite effective. It's completely airtight and no smell seeps through the glass.

Definitely concur with what's been said above (except for the leaving it in a bag in the jar). I usually have a bigger jar that I open less frequently to replenish my small jar with. I always found after a few weeks in an airtight glass, weed seems to cure perfectly, and stays like that for a long time...

You're not supposed to put it in a bag before you put it in a mason jar.

The reason mason jars are used is because they are pretty much airtight and the glass doesn't pull the trichomes off due to an electrostatic attraction like plastics often do. If the buds have been dried correctly, no condensation will form and mold won't be an issue and the bud will cure whilst it's being stored, but it's still a good idea to 'burp' your jars periodically by opening them up, dumping your bud out and carefully putting it back.

Some people have suggested that for long term storage removing the oxygen can extend the shelf life of your bud. Whilst you could put an inert atmosphere in like they do with perishable food products (nitrogen being the most commonly used gas), an oxygen absorber used for long term food storage would be more feasible. All these are are just cheap sachets of powdered iron with salt and sometimes some activated charcoal. You can make these yourself but they're so cheap you may as well buy them.

There is another simple way of storing your bud - vacuum sealing. Lots of people I know say this works really well, is cheap once you have the equipment and is easy. The only drawback is it crushes your weed so it loses it's bag appeal but if you're the only one smoking your bud this won't be an issue. One piece of advice I would give would be to invest in the proper equipment as cheaper ones don't work well enough.

Glass jars are the only way to go IMO. Every harvest (6-10lbs) I go and buy about 5-12 packs of wide mouthed quart glass mason jars from my walmart for $10/12pack. I also have a fair share of glass on glass large stoarge jars like alot of herb shops have. I have seen herb stored in everything including 10 lbs in a 40 gallon storage tote and after a few motnhs it started just getting less potent and started to get a brown hue.

Get a mason Jar.

haha fuck yeah. for your personal amounts that you take out of the jar/ride around with etc.. id suggest a pill bottle. i either use pill bottles or mini mason jars.

O JMASTA R is a complete bullshitter. How insecure must he be to think he has to make up complete crap to impress random people on the internet lol.
The op specified large quanties which imo implied lbs + not personal amounts. I was not trying to show off but simply convey that I have experience cureing large amounts of herb so my advice had logic too it. I am not here to impress anyone I have enough patients and friends that thank me on a regular basis . If you really insist and don't believe me artificial emotion say the word and ill post a video with my username & yours in a youtube and link it to bluelight. I am not here to impress anyone but I have never seen so much hate towards a grower go to any weed forum and you'll realize 10lb harvests are nothing. Just here to give advice.

I prefer the look of those Kilner jars you can get (not the one pictured in darksidesam's post) but people seem to claim that Le Parfait is slightly better quality and therefore better over the long term. Buying the jars is a really good long term investment IMO.

By the way, a really good tip I learned from a certain well known breeder and grower is that if you dry your weed for just under an extra week you don't need to burp your jars daily (if at all) and they cure just as well if not better.

If you have time, (about a year) a chest freezer, mason jars and (unprocessed) long grain rice, or moisture absorbing capsules try freeze drying fresh (just harvested) bud.
I've been very surprised w/ the results (a refer' freezer works, just more chance of freezer burn)

My 15 year old 10 gallon metal Coleman cooler w/ lid gasket still works excellent for normal storage.

For long term storage, which by my standards would be an ounce or more, I go with a mason jar in the freezer.

I also try to avoid plastics with my buds, especially soft plastics because of a) the static charge, and b) I've heard/read some disturbing facts about plastics.

Although in a pinch I won't refuse a plastic baggie. Better than keeping it loose.
