Storing Marijuana (merged)

you shouldn't be storing it for any longer than two weeks. After that it starts going dry and turns into crap. This happened to me before and mighty pissed me off. in the end i was nearly having to give it away and I ended up losing quite a bit of $

I think we could definitely use some Blowmonkey insight on this thread. I've also been wondering the best way to store large amounts of weed. I usually keep mine in airtight mason jars but they still seem to end up losing weight (drying out).

Drying out isnt necessarily a bad thing. It will make the weed easier to grind, pack, and smoke. I usually leave my weed in a glass jar for at least a couple days to let it dry further. As for storage, think cool, think dark, think dry. Glass jars are my personal favorite, and the favorite of alot of people I know, but a bunch of the dealers I know keep theres in kief boxes, which are basically stash boxes with screens for bottoms, allowing the kief to fall onto a tray. Tupperware works fine too, but I wouldnt use it for long term storage.

get an airtight jar, like a mason jar, and store it in there. your weed won't dry out that way, and can be kept there fore a loooong time.

I personally have no idea whether this is smart or not but I put all my bud in one of those Altoid cans...
Seems fine to smoke, even after a good 3 weeks.

I keep mine in a cigar humidor along with my blunts and fine cigars.

Mason Jars, Pill Bottles, even altoids cans (what I use for the herb I will consume within next few days) tend to work but the altoids can still seems to dry my bud out a little bit. Mason jars and pill bottles should do you quite fine for extended periods of time. In those containers it shouldnt get any dryer really, and if you are wanting to store for a really fucking long time you can go as far as to freeze it (but you would need to make sure its already cured before you do that I think, thats what ive always been told).

I'm currently storing my green within a zip lock bag inside one of those small tupperware containers, and I was wondering, how long can I store it in there until it starts to lose potency? And does it, after a few weeks, get so dry that it's extremely difficult to smoke? Any suggestions on how to avoid this happening...Thanks

If it's stored airtight and in a not all too warm environment (<21 celcius), it shouldn't loose (much) potency. If the bud is too dry for your liking, you could always add a few drops of water (no vegetable or fruit peels, you'll invite mould) and let it sit for a while for the bud to absorb some moisture again, solves that problem.

Merged your thread with an existing one.

Blowmonkey, I keep my pot in a humidor with some wet dessicants (I think they are silica based). Do you think this environment is too humid for long term storage. Do you think you risk fungal growth?

storing weed

Most of the ideas are go ones, but I use a seal-a-meal that sucks out all the air in the bag and then I put in in my deep freeze that is set at -10 deg. I put some really good kind bud in there last summer and we opened it last week and it was just as good as the day I packaged it.

I keep the bud I'm smoking at the moment in pill bottles and the bud I save, I keep in little glass jars.

If I store weed in the freezer, then take out whatever I need when I need it, its obviously frozen? So when it defrosts, won't it collect some water in the process and become soggy? Or does freezing weed not change the characteristics of the weed at all?

Humidity in the freezer and the fridge is not high, like you're imagining. Weed will stay dry.

sometimes i dry my weed up crispy and break it up to a powder with my fingers, just a green powder,, and i smoke it in the bong and that shit will fuck me up ,,

I usually keep my herbs in a jar and put a little piece of wet paper in there when it gets to dry. But it is annoying having fluctuating moisture too wet, too dry.
I have been thinking about trying a humidity tube like one of these http://www.heartfeltindustries.com/products.asp?cat=14
They keep a steady RH and don’t fluctuate.
I’m wondering if 65% is too high, and might get mold.

Man, I posted on this thread well over a year and half ago. I've been doing some long term storage of buds and can still say MASON JARS are the very best.

1. Don't buy really dry bud, inspect it first. It needs to be even with moisture and dryness. I tend to like my bud slightly wet.

2. As soon as you get your bud, have a specific jar long term jar to put it into (mason jar) only take out what you might use in a week and then store that into your 'daily' jar. That away your not constantly opening and closing your main jar releasing moisture.

3. A cool, dry, dark place is best. Refridgerators/freezers aren't any good because your buds are surrounded by frozen items which contain lots of water/moisture. Trust me, I've learned from experience. You don't want to smoke moldy buds. Plus if your buds still have moisture in them (don't buy dried up buds) then yeah, mold will grow in the freezer. It's that simple.

4. I've stored bud for up to a year (no bullshit) and opened my jar to find it the same way I left it, maybe even better since it's cured for so long. Instead of using just a mason jar, double up on it. Nowadays I put all my bud in a mason jar with a screw on lid, then put that into a much larger mason jar that has the silicon around the edges and you can shut the top with the latch. I also recommend using a stainless steel jar as no light will penetrate it. I believe that's about the best you can get.

5. You may ask "why the hell is this guy storing his buds for a year?" Because every once in awhile you get that dank ass bud that you wish you could smoke on for any special occasion. 95% of the bud I get is homegrown yet I don't dig all strains. But when I do come across something that smells/looks/smokes out of this world, it's something you want to hold on to (or at the least buy a lot of).

If your truly a connoisseur then follow my advice and enjoy buds for as long as you want to. Now excuse me while I go open up a nicely cured jar (10months) of an unknown purple strain.
