Hello, I'm Steve and I'm pretty new to this site. I've read threads looking for information on several occasions but just now decided to register myself. I'm 32, live in Tennessee, married with 2 little ones and currently dealing with getting clean. I've had a 4 year addiction with opiates after a major back surgery. I was taking about 120-160mg of oxy a day. I've finally got my shit together and decided to quit this crap. It's cost me several jobs and a bunch of other stuff we won't get into. I've just got into a suboxone doctor and have been on that for a little over 2 weeks. So basically I joined to get information on suboxone and when is good for me to quit taking it. Please feel free to message me if you have any experience with it, I'd love to talk to whoever. I need all the support I can get!

Hi Steve,

Welcome to our community. Good to have you here. Congratulations on getting off the oxy! I took subs for a little while but mostly methadone to jump off Heroin. Was addicted to oxy for a while myself. Please feel free to ask me any questions about the site. Here is the Suboxone/Buprenorphine Mega Thread v. 19 for starters, under Other Drugs. :)

Hey thank you for the support! Listen I do have a question that I posted earlier but maybe you can help me. I've been on suboxone for 2 weeks and 2 days, taking about 1 half of a 8mg strip a day. If I start to wean myself off this week will I experience withdrawals of any kind? I don't want to stay on the subs very long because I heard the withdrawals coming off of them are bad! The last thing I want is to get addicted to another drug. I haven't abused these at all, just have taken a half a day every day.

Congrats on taking the subs appropriately.
The w/drawals can be pretty painful, you are right about that; although - it's been only a couple weeks you say? And, you have passed the major withdrawals from the oxy. I can't tell you what the best route is for you as everyone is different, but in my experience life is better being off all opiates partial and/or full agonists. I even have spinal debilitations.

I personally would start tapering sooner than later. You might not need to do a long taper since it's only been a couple weeks. You might have some withdrawals, but the hardest part with subs is when you are cutting off from 2 mg, from what I've observed and people have reported. Also at that time you will be jumping 25 - 50 % verses a smaller percentage from 8 to 7mg per say. I would suggest tapering down to a low dose for starters. Sober Living might also be a place to post questions. :)

Hey there Steve, welcome. I have no suboxone knowledge, but plenty of experience with addiction. Oxy & I have a love/hate r'ship, & have been through more wds than I care to remember. So, if you're looking for support now or when you jump off subs I'm more than happy to chat.

Well done in escaping the clutches of addiction,

Thanks so much for the advice. I posted the question under sober living also. Yeah, I've been on subs for 2 weeks and 3 days now. I was prescribed 2 8mg strips a day but I only take a half a strip a day. I'm just scared to death that my body will become dependant on these subs and I'll be in the same situation I was. I just want to be done with it all. I'm so sick of my life relying on a pill ya know. I have been going to the gym every single day also, heard that helped jump starting the endorphins. Any advice I can get I'm very grateful for. Thanks again

Thank you so much for offering up the support. God knows I need it to stay committed. My head is in a good place right now, I'm ready to be done. I'm sick of it running my life, I'm sick of the day to day struggle. I know I'm doing the right thing at this point I just want to come off these subs before I'm in too deep. Same to you, if u get a time of weakness then feel free to message me man. I'll definitely be here for u too.

welcome to BL!

best of luck with getting clean; I'm really inspired by your desire to get clean while you're taking care of your children. <3

Thanks man. Listen it's not easy brother. It's a day by day struggle. I recently got a new tattoo that says "you've seen my decent, now watch my rising" . It's to remind me every day that I have to stay focused. I'm not going back to that old life. Right now I just need to come off of the subs and that's that man. I'm about to start only taking a fourth of a strip then half of that then done!! I'm very nervous about it but very motivated, I'm still hitting that gym every day!

Don't rush the subs treatment, there's no shame in taking it for a longer period if the result is less physical & psychological cravings,- hence a better long term success rate.
