Steel Bowl burns too fast

I have a little steel bowl that my dad gave me, and it burns through herb a lot faster that any other piece I've tried... Is there anything I can do to have it burn slower? Buying a new pipe isn't an option for me yet, not expecting extra money for a while...

While I'm on the subject, what material do you like best for a pipe? With regards to heat, harshness, taste, etc. My favorite piece so far has been a handcarved stone and bamboo pipe.

about the only thing that you can do with steel bowls to slow the burning is to utilize your lighter. right after you light the bowl, cover it with the flat part of your lighter, and continue holding your lighter over it until youve exhaled your hit. This will conserve the bud in your bowl from continuing to burn after youve taken your rip helping to conserve your budskis.

another tip for a steel bowl would be to use a cap if you have one for it, they usually have a hole in the top of the cap for the flame to come down through. those really help too.

as for what material i like best, im a real big fan of Pyrex glass pipes and old handmade Horn/Bone pipes :)

yeah put your lighter over the cherry of the bowl. I've seen some people use coins or just snuff out the cherry with the end of their lighter.

As far as materials for bowls go when I was into smoking I liked to mainly smoke out of hand blown glass, and wooden pipes. I smoked out of a steel or metal pipe for years before glass was widely available, well made, and cheap. I preferred glass because it was very easy to clean.

Putting the lighter over the bowl is the most effective way to snuff out your bowl but, I also like the snuffer on my pipe tool works pretty well. As for my preferred smoking implement as pipes go I prefer wood for heat absorption, taste, and smoothness, glass is nice but fragile (something bad for me 'cause I'm clumsy) metal is nice for durability but, good ole' hard wood still gets my vote. I would like to try stone and bone though just for the sake of trying something new and different.

how would stone and bamboo sound "ineffective."
Any reason you think so Noboru

i don't know. i guess whenever i've smoked out of bowls like that (stone or cob or something other than just glass) the weed we were smoking sucked or something but it never really got me baked enough to be satisfied. i just don't see how it could be as good as glass at providing a clean-tasting, smooth burning smoke. it's mainly just bad personal, biased experience that gives me the opinion.

I have a dome lid for it, but my lighter is starting to run out of fluid and I suck the flame out before it burns anything if I use it...

Humidify your weed and it will burn slower and cooler. Spray a little mist of water on a bit of your stash, maybe just humidify a couple of days worth at a time. My bowl is brass (the rest is made from horn). I light the edge and toke slowly so the fire stays small. After a toke, I put my thumb over the bowl so it goes out. Then relight a small part when ready for another toke.

1. humidify some of your weed
2. light the edge, not the whole thing
3. toke slowly, keep the burning part small
4. cover the bowl with your thumb when not in use
5. smoking alone makes it last longer also

Their is a device I believe its called a humidor. Its a little ball you soak in water and it slowly adds moisture.

i reccomend switching to a thick(read: not cheap) glass spoon type bowl. The thicker the better, as it will disperse the heat better, thus keeping you from burning your fingers and helps burn the weed slower. Really though, im sure the bowl your using now isn't really wasting that much anyways, so if its what you got, just be happy with it.
