FRANKFORT, Ky. — A western Kentucky legislator has proposed a measure that would take a comprehensive approach to cracking down on synthetic drugs that simulate the effects of marijuana, cocaine and other natural drugs.
Rep. John Tilley, a Hopkinsville Democrat, spoke about the bill at a news conference Tuesday in the Capitol Rotunda. Others who spoke included other legislators, law enforcement officers, a prosecutor, the head of the Justice Cabinet and a toxicology expert.
Tilley said in 1992, the General Assembly tried to address the synthetic drug problem by banning certain formulas. Chemists got around the law by altering those formulas. His legislation would correct that problem by banning whole classes of compounds that can be used in different ways to create drugs.
