Starting to workout

like others said CARDIO.
i haven't been in shape for nearly a year and a half because of growth problems fucking up my hip joints, so in a few months i will be in the same boat you're in.
Swimming, rowing, climbing - are probably the best sports for all round fitness and muscle tone.
It really depends on what type of physique you want - these kind of sports will give you more of a lean, proportioned body shape than working out.

^^
You can be just as lean and proportioned from weight lifting as you can from any of the above activities, you just have to know what you're doing.

i suppose so.
I just think that a lot of people are disheartened by the thought of going to the gym, and that sport is generally a better way to get fit - less self-absorbed (i don't know many guys that lift and aren't wankers) and more sociable - and they often incorporate strectching and coordination into the mix.
Not to devalue lifting (obviously some people love it, and its good for supplementing training) but i often think people approach getting fit in the wrong way, and as a chore.

why not combine the cardio and weight lifting and be super fit :)

the one thing I suggest if you are lazy, is to force someone to go with you, to spot you, and you spot him.

believe me, when you have someone behind you you will try to work harder, noone wants to look weak :p

Anyone who is serious about swimming, rowing or climbing lifts weights. And recommending climbing (in particular) for someone who is out of shape as a replacement for lifting is kind of like recommending hunting as a replacement for target practice for someone who is afraid of guns.

And I don't know what gym you're going to, but, though I am, in fact, a wanker, the gyms I have gone to have all been full of nice guys, and even the straight up bodybuilders tend not to be all that self-absorbed. Sure, there are some assholes, but if you haven't noticed yet, there are assholes everywhere.

haha
of course weights are good for concentrating on key muscle groups.
I really don't want to generalise, but my experience with guys who see the gym, and weight lifting as a discipline, is that they turn into self-absorbed, self-righteous (in the fitness sense!) wankers. Without exception.
But, that is just my experience - i don't want an argument with hardcore (nice guy) lifters.

"And recommending climbing (in particular) for someone who is out of shape as a replacement for lifting is kind of like recommending hunting as a replacement for target practice for someone who is afraid of guns."

eh? - i'm not talking overhangs and K2 to begin with here. If you have a local climbing wall i'd suggest going there for an introductory session.
It's no harder getting started at then any other sport. I just put it forth as an immensley enjoyable and satisfying way to get extremely fit. Better than doing reps anyway.

bah, i come across as a bit of a dick in this post...whatever.

when i first joined a gym, after seeing the same ripped guy there whenever i was, i just asked him if he wouldn't mind giving me a few tips on form, exercises, diet etc.

Its never wise to rely soley on someone else's opinion (unless they are trained in it of course), however most of these guys are really helpful and can point you in the right direction.

An added bonus is that they will often spot (help out) for you when you are doing trickier exercises.

You will recognise the ones that will help straight away, they are the guys that spend more time wandering about the gym than lifting weights, its as much of a social scene for them as a fitness routine. :)

cool.
unfortunately i never saw that where i went.
Maybe it was the wrong time of day or something...

Weightlifting for girls!

Girls should definitely lift weights! Weight lifting is one of the main ways for a girl to work against bone density loss as you get older. Wankers? You're talking power lifters who are into getting massive muscles. If you look around the gym, you will see plenty of people who just do it for the health benefits.

Also, only increased muscle mass will really help speed up your metabolism. Cardio will help you burn calories, but you will burn many more calories during cardio if you have more muscle mass. As few as 5 main weight exercises for major muscle groups a couple of times a week can dramatically increase your metabolic rate and therefore make you burn fat a HELL of a lot faster.

I've been doing Windsor Pilates you know the one on the infomercial. Yes it really works and its easy. You do these exercises that seem like your barley doing anything but next thing you know you've lost weight. I've been doing it about 3 weeks and I already see results. I also try to watch what I eat but Im not restricting to the point where Im hungry and eating nothing but rabbit food. Moderation is the key, another book I found very helpful is Dr.Phils Ultimate weight loss solution. Good luck it aint easy my friend

a final bit of advice to remember is start off with the policy: "more reps, less weight"

i see too many beginners putting lifting weight that is too much for them and they end of sacrificing good form in the process. form is just as important (if not more important) than the amount of weight you are lifting. concentrate on achieving a full set (3x 12 reps) for that toned look rather than just bulking up with massive amounts of weights :D good luck

^^^While i agree with you regarding form, it is important to be clear that more reps/less weight does NOT equal a more toned look. It is a myth. More muscle and less fat equal a more toned look.

i started studying kung fu, i found that to be good body training/good fun, then when i started going to the gym i knew what i should be working on.
