i recently was reading a book on daoist health, and came across a segment which suggests trying squatting when going to the toilet, as opposed to sitting

all other animals and our closest relatives, primates, squat down with their knees drawn to their chests when nature calls. most humans today even defecate in this manner esp. in asia, middle east and africa

only in the industrialised west do we sit down for BM just as we sit down to eat, apparently this could be the cause of chronic constipation and haemorrhoids.

bcus nature wants us to squat, our digestive system thanks us for it because there is a straight passage, bowel -> bowl, as opposed to sitting down which causes the lower end of the descending colon to bend, which means it takes a lot of muscular effort to clear the bowels. this can put pressure on capillaries causing haemorrhoids to form.

theres so many benefits to it, i'm surprised nobody has really brought up the subject to me, i know its an "ew, grossss" topic, but its pretty nifty imo

to do it, just remove pants/undies/shoes/socks (not just around ankles, get those panties off!), and put ur feet on the rim with the seat down (if you have just shoes on, then seat up with feet on rim still), and squat with your hands balancing you on something nearby, and just let loose.

ive been doing it for the past 2 weeks, and going to the toilet is no longer something that bores me or i am apprehensive about, i also spend about 1/3 of the time i used to, and i feel like i pass more through my system than usual.

it takes a tiny bit of practice to get used to it, but its worth it..

anyone else out there do this besides me? do you think its gross? if so why?

if youve never done it before, i challenge you to try it for yourself and see if it makes any difference.

travelling around asia you come across this style on a regualr basis - me decided no - but some of the girl toilets didnt provide the western option - they told me is wasn't a comfortable way to go....

i guess if your not very flexible it could be difficult, but i find it more comfortable in every aspect

I tried it today and it was definitely faster and easier. It could have been a coincidence though, I'll report back in a few days.

Some old parks and houses here in lebanon still have squat toilets but 99% of toilets are now sitting toilets.

im pretty disappointed sitting toilets ever caught on.. thanks for sharing ur exp flyhighk, i know the topic is kinda controversial and 'icky', so i'm happy i got any replies =D

did you know that in airports and bullet trains in japan, you can find both "western style" toilets and "japanese style" (squat) toilets

since squat toilets don't exist in north america, whenever i'm dropping a deuce at home, i place a garbage can or some sort of foot rest thing that comes up > 30 cm. it's basically habit now

^ yeh thats a good compromise, we have a stool at my house as well

You'll have to change your toilet . Squatting on a western toilet can break it and you can slip and cause some serious damage to yourself.

i dont think replacing the toilet would go down well with my folks, that is a pretty nasty slice in that guys body from falling off a toilet 0.0

i'm pretty well co-ordinated though, so tbh, its not really on my mind, but i appreciate the concern..

I've tried it before.. but after looking at that picture in the link HOLY SHIT I'm not trying that ever again.. can't be dealing with that kind of bum/thigh gash, looks well painful!

I do remember it being very easy to pass and more complete which was great.. I do feel that sometimes my movements aren't 100% complete due to the sitting posture, and the only way is to strain.. which you shouldn't do.

Got no problems with the balance at all. Everyone should be able to do it, and if you can't then well your balance fucking sucks! It's a movement even young children can automatically do without problems. Definitely think squatting is the way forward.. though I can't imagine what the loo's in a british pub would look like on a friday night.. probably a lot of idiots getting their feet stuck in it etc.

How about hovering? I assume this is what everybody does when using public toilets. The hovering position is a high squat right?

I don't know if this has the same effect. Seem to recall reading that the full squat puts pressure on your colon or opens up a channel wider or something like that.

Doing a full, deep squat is strangely satisfying. It's finished quickly and not too messy.

Probably because we've been doing that for thousands of years and only recently we've changed. The memory of a trillion satisfying squat shits flows through your veins.
