Getting to the point ...
In case you guys missed the ANNOUNCEMENT, we'll be deleting all threads that haven't been replied to in the past 6 months. This should improve server performance as well as the results from any searches by TFSE (yeah, I know, that was the reason you weren't using it, right? ;) ). Consider this your 2 week notice to let the mods know which older threads you think ought to be saved. Come the end of that time frame *poof* all those older threads will be deleted without a trace.

Okay everyone, here is the list of bluelighters who's works we want to save. As TLB suggested, we can just check them off the list when we get all of their works archived. If you guys have any other usernames(or specific threads) you would like to add to the list, just let us know and we can archive them as well.

I think this might need to be stickied as I'm not sure if the regular Words contributors have seen it. I personally feel that Words may need a different approach to that taken in the larger forums. I'm not a regular here but a lot of my husband's poetry would probably get deleted... he has his own archives but probably not with all the comments included.

I stickied this til after the cleanup is done.

Tronica, if there are certain poems with critiques you feel would be valuable to archive, bump them and make note that you think it's a thread of value and we can archive it.

FUCK.
i tried to save all my old poems once into a text file. there are HUNDREDS of them. i want them all. i better get busy. what is the due date?

It's not going to be the exact same date for all forums, and I imagine they might get to words after some of the others since it's a less active forum. But I'd say you had about two weeks.

I think it's pretty disappointing so much of the work in here is going to be lost. I couldn't care less about any of the social forums, but this one contains so much original work by people and it was always good to be able to go back and read old pieces as I remembered them.

Per the latest ANNOUNCEMENT update

Next Update:

Frequent question - will post counts drop? We're taking every step to ensure this is not going to happen.

Frequent question - what about the archives? That's where the good stuff is intended to be saved from regular pruning (provided such a thread isn't simply kicked back into active discussion). So, anything in an archive is accepted as having been reviewed AND saved already, the archives will not be subject to the pruning process.

Frequent screaming whine - 2 freaking weeks? Are you kidding me? Well, no, we're not kidding but 2 weeks is proving to be a bit unrealistic (ya think, TLB? 8) ). 2 Weeks is not a hard deadline, and we're working with the mods on how to best handle each forum on a case-by-case basis but overall the entire site will be reviewed in an effort to trim the fat. This may take several weeks, possibly a month or more, for some of the heavier trafficked forums or those who have not seen a prune in 5+ years (thereby inheriting a LOT of stuff to review before we clean house).

Well, do you have any ones in particular that you'd like to see saved?

Yep. Everything by E-girl, harraser, minimows, Dagny, ice-9, Sara Tonin, Gillywin, katmeow, Raz, Wordy, Shuddr2think, -resque-, butrosbutros_grantos... and that's just off the top of my head. There are definitely more, but I'd assume a lot of these will be archived and some will have been commented on in the past six months so it'll take me a while to get a list together.

Deleting this stuff is similar to deleting journals. They're more personal than the usual bullshit banter of other forums.

i'm not about to start bumping all my stuff, in regards to stuff wanting saved. i'm just backing it all up myself but i feel like a chunk of me if going to go away from this place. its not so much going back and reading what i've written -- i can still recite every piece pretty much word for word. its the comments and memories that mean a lot to me. its been 10 years+ on here... i've practically grown up in this forum. it is really sad to see this go away. i feel like a legacy that many of us thought we had left behind is about to be destroyed :( maybe that's extreme, but upallnight, i know where you are coming from. its fine that i back up all my old stuff, but what about those nights i want to reread a certain piece of someone else's.... your "Cafe and Coffee Talk" or Jay's "It's nights like tonight" or dagny's or minimows or raz's.. or WHATEVER. i cant possibly sit down and think of all the pieces i need to archive.

i say we start a petition to save the Words forum, AS IS, in whole.

I realise that my reaction is purely sentimental. Words was the first place on BL where I really felt like I made a connection with people and seven years later (even though it's a new crowd and I don't write anything myself) I still feel like it's my main connection to this site.

This forum doesn't get heaps of traffic, surely it doesn't need pruning? It feels really weird that current mods don't seem to care about this. When I started posting on BL the mods were passionate and interested in this forum.

Okay.....maybe I need to choose different .... words. ;)

The intent is NOT to remove everyone's beloved and cherished entries from days of yore. Nay, say I. The intent is to remove things that are not of use. For a forum like this, you may have misplaced threads, spam, or other things that ought not remain. That is the focus of a prune, to remove the things that serve no purpose. Would an old discussion of an author provide grounds for more discussion? Would the work of an individual serve as either inspiration for later writers or a touchstone for the dear memories of those in our past? I would suspect the answer is a resounding yes, and as such those older threads are of value even if they aren't getting replies anymore.

If we just wanted to remove anything older than 6 months, we'd have deleted it and been done with it. No warning, just gone. Instead we've asked each forum to review what is relevant to them, to evaluate what they've got and see what is worth keeping versus what is easily removed and nothing of value is lost. For each forum that is different.

I will admit heartburn and misery since starting this PRUNE campaign, and while it's been a long time (perhaps this is the only time) for a lot of people to try and get used to it.....I've been through many of them. That said, there are several lessons from the past in doing this process that I forgot and they are piling up on me now. There is still a need for each forum to review what can be removed and what ought to stay, and we'll give every effort to heed those views as forum dependent as they are. I'm sorry for getting people all upset, that wasn't the intended result, nor was a bunch of heartburn and misery on anyone's part.

:groan:

Yeah, I think the nature of this forum means that virtually every thread means something to someone. In some cases, perhaps, that may be limited to the OP. I can't think of too many 'worthless' threads, spam, etc. Genuine spam would have generally been deleted by the mods as soon as they noticed it anyway.

If, rather than selecting the threads we do want to keep, the task becomes one of weeding out threads we don't want to keep (and the latter does seem a more sensible approach), then perhaps there are some old discussion threads which are no longer of value? Probably not a huge number, though, imo.

On the other hand, perhaps a different approach would be to prune all threads which have received no replies? Generally speaking, in the case of creative pieces I'd say the OP would have their own copy of the piece. If not, they would have the option of saving the content for themselves before the prune occurs. Speaking for myself, with the creative pieces I've posted in this forum, I'm more concerned about preserving the comments and feedback, as opposed to the piece itself (which I have backed up elsewhere anyway). Also, if members have particular writers they love (as up all night discussed above), they may wish to search for threads by those writers where no replies were posted, and bump up anything they think ought to be preserved.

^Those are some good ideas.

It feels really weird that current mods don't seem to care about this.

:\

What makes you say we don't care? I told you guys I would archive anything anyone felt was important. Saying we don't care is a bit unfair.

I can only speak for me personally, but I don't honestly care if my old poems get deleted on here. All of my writings I have backed up elsewhere. I usually delete a lot of stuff I post after getting critiqued (segments from my book anyway) so I don't mind about that. But I totally understand if you guys want certain threads saved because of the responses and what not. How does that add up to us not caring? *confused* sorry if it comes across that way.

My suggestion is that the "three threads on the front page" rule be suspended. This way, if you are interested in seeing certain pieces saved, go ahead and bump everything. That will offer it automatic protection from the prune. If you want to take it a step further, I would suggest archiving everything into a singular thread. Perhaps this thread can be moved to the permanent archives. If people want all of the replies saved as well, I would be happy to do the merging for you.

I think a better solution would be to find a "dumping ground" where you can throw the threads that aren't wanted into a "prune-zone", so to speak, rather than massively disrupting the flow of Words.

That's kinda where I got stuck...maybe into another forum that's doing a general prune?
