Sports apparel in fashion.

I sent a girl home wearing my Gary Freeman Balmain jersey one morning and never saw it again. :(

I have to say one of my favourite t shirts is my Newtown Jets ...

in the US, we also aren't so serious about our teams as other places. In South America, hundreds of people die in a single game because of stampedes, riots, whatever. If I was traveling in South America, I would surely avoid wearing anything that seemed like team colours, because people are crazy serious about that kind of stuff!

It looks like at least 2 or 3 of these dudes the hats matched the colors of their shirt/undershirt, so I can see that. And it ain't like it's just one dude wearin like 4 diff teams, it's all diff dudes. But with the way they make every team hat in every color these days, you might as well pick a team and stick with it.

The look on dudes face rockin that Eagles hat is classic tho

Personally, I rock Pittsburgh Pirates hats all the time, I got about 25 and unless I'm at the barbershop or in the crib I always got one on. I don't fuck with baseball at all, when I'm in diff states people always ask me "aw you like the Pirates?" I'm like nah I just rock em cuz I'm from Pittsburgh. I am a die hard Steelers fans tho, but NFL hats usually aren't as classy as MLB hats and I love the Pirates logo.

Around here a lot of people rock diff teams to is represent diff gangs. Like back before the feds busted L.A.W. (Larimer Ave - Wilkinsburg gang) all the boys used to rock Dodgers hats and a lot of times black out the white LA with a sharpie or somethin so it was black on black which was their colors and it had the LA for Larimer Ave. You see a lot of dudes out in LA rockin Pirates shit too, for Piru bloods or whatever I can't remember which gang it is.

It's too bad no one is wearing a cap with a different jersey - something I see all the time.

Yeah... I can understand different teams from day to day, but different teams (from different cities) in one outfit??? That's kinda weak.

Which does remind me. One of the reasons I started this thread was because I happened to catch a Lil' Wayne video where he had on a Red Sox hat and a Yankees necklace. Anyone who doesn't know... that's a VERY storied rivalry in baseball. To me... that was just tacky. I don't know if it was supposed to be a subtle message or if he's just stupid.

haven't you considered that people may have love for more than one city? i mean, i'd consider Dallas, Cleveland and Phoenix equally to be my hometown teams and since my boyfriend is from Philly, i support his teams, too. i wouldn't think twice about wearing an Iggs shirt and a Cards hat. 'specially if they were both playing that day. :)

^ Oh, for shame.

Either way, it's one thing to rock an Eagles shirt and a Cards hat, but a Red Sox hat with a Yankees necklace??? That'd be like me wearing a Browns shirt with a Steelers hat, a Habs jersey with a Maple Leafs hat, a Celtics shirt with a Lakers hat, a Chelsea kit with a Man U scarf, a [AUS rules football team] shirt with a [AUS rules football team's biggest rival] hat. :D

That shit just don't fly with me! I know I probably take my sports a bit too seriously, but to me that shows a lack of allegiance and sports ignorance. Sports ignorance is forgivable, but I usually expect someone who's willing to shell out the money for a shirt/hat/jersey/etc. to at least know a little something about the team(s) they're representing.

i still don't understand why someone can't be a fan of more than one team. i mean, i understand the rivalry bit, but again, it could be just be an ironic coincidence that some people support both teams. maybe someone grew up in Nebraska, but had ties to two rival teams. or, what about Brady Quinn's sister who was dating (now married to) AJ Hawk?

also, in the case of Lil Wayne, i'm pretty sure he's a devout Red Sox fan. i think the chain you're seeing is the logo for the Young Money label. Google is m' fwiend.

Here, here undead. If is a serious lack of repsect to the uniform and the supporters of that team.

In New Zealand they take it a little further. In fact up until 10-15 years ago you would not see any supporter wearing a replica All Blacks jersey. There is a very strong belief that those who have been selected to play for them are held in such high regard that it is insulting for mere mortals to wear the same jersey that they have strived for so long to earn. It is a select group not just a brand. There was an even bigger uproar when ADIDAS became their major sponsor and wanted to add a third white stripe to the teams socks.

Wearing a teams colours is not just a fashion statement, it is a being accepted into it's supporters group and all that they stand for. It is like wearing war medals, you are repping past glories as well as future battles. Wearing a rivals colours at the same time should punishable by death.

FP, in the case of Brady Quinn's sister... that's acceptable (in my mind) because Ohio State and Notre Dame aren't rivals. Had Brady Quinn attended Michigan... then I'd say "tough titties, you gotta choose one or the other. Who means more to you, your brother or your future husband?" She's the exception to the rule, generally speaking, though. However, in a rivalry... there are no exceptions.

That aside, it may (again) be my way too serial passion for sports, but I just don't get the "I have two favorite teams" argument. I have one favorite team in every sport. There are other teams I enjoy watching, but in each sport it's one team far above every team below them. If I moved to NYC... I'd still be an Indians fan, but you bet your ass I'd take in some Mets games. Though no team will ever eclipse my childhood fandom. Which is why it's weird and unsettling for me to see so many people flaunting their false allegiances to teams they have no interest in. ESPECIALLY... when they claim to be a fan of a team while wearing another teams' hat. I manage to rep Cleveland pretty hard with what I consider to be some hella sweet swag. :D

Couldn't have said it better myself. Part of why I love seeing Cleveland hats and shirts when I'm on the road is that no matter how far I am from home... I know there's someone who I can have a casual conversation with. It's comforting. :)

EDIT: Oh... I forgot to comment on the necklace, FP! Thanks for the clarification! That's probably what it was, I never thought to check because in passing it ABSOLUTELY looked identical to the NY. That being said... if I were Lil' Wayne and I really was a die hard BoSox fan... you wouldn't catch me dead wearing that Young Money necklace simply because it LOOKS like the Yankees logo.

who is this FP you speak of, ryan? :X ;)

i think it's easy for you to make the argument because you've grown up and lived in the same house in the same area your entire life. i think if you'd been a transplant with no defined "hometown", you might see how a person could have ties to more than one city - or how more than one city's team would be close to your heart and you'd be happy for the success of either.

and, can we all agree that the Yankees, the Lakers and the Cowboys are everyone's rival teams? perhaps, if you're a fan of either of these three teams, what shall be referred to as the "undead apparel rule", you should be held to the strictest regard - you're either all or nothing. (this is exactly the reason i don't support the Cowboys though my entire family especially my beloved Granny, are from E. TX and devout fans; it's just not right to like the Cowboys and like another team. well, that and the boyfriend would probably kick me to the curb.)

either way, i certainly agree with your earlier statements that people wearing certain garb because they "like the colors" is absurd and they should be hanged by their toenails. also, were these men?

oh, and re: Lil Wayne. if a label was making you a bazillionaire rich bitch, i'm sure you'd find a way to get over its logo's similar font to your favorite team's rival team. :p <3

i think the US has a lot of casual fans, or fans who support teams because they live in that city but don't really care about the sport. that is how i am towards MLS teams. i used to support the columbus crew because i lived near by and went to games with a friend. when that friend moved, he got seattle sounders tickets and i went to sounders games with him. while i don't follow soccer very closely, i still love the city of seattle and happily wear my sounders stuff. however, i would never go out in a steelers shirt with my sounders jacket or steelers hat and indians shirt.

it seems that places where sports apparel/colors is taken more seriously have only one team/sport for the area. in any major US city, you are likely to have 2-4 professional teams plus various college teams in the area. if you are an avid sports fan who has moved, its very likely you will support a hodgepodge of teams.

damn i just clicked on this thread cuz I was tryna think WTF it would be about. I thought it was gona be some dude talkin about like bike shorts and fuckin , jogging suits and shit lol.

Anyways, after I read the OP i was like damn where is this dude livin at? throwback jerseys and all that sports shit was hot in like 2005. Shit aint all that popular now , at least not with "hip hop fashion" like ppl been callin it. yea people always wear fitteds to rep their city or their colors. but the era of jerseys n all that bein real popular is loong past, here at least

I do gotta say that when I been lookin in magazines lately like i was lookin at victorias secret and they had all this fuckin college team underwear and shit, and i guarantee you most of the broads buyin that shit aint no more than casual sports fans at most...So i kinda see where the OP comin from there, but as far as talkin about team gear bein popular with rappers n all that it aint as big as it was. like i said....folks still wearin it but it aint the "thing" now like it was back a few yrs ago when a fitted n a fresh jersey was like the hot shit to wear to the club, nowadays they wont even let u in with that shit on in some of them places..

Off topic, bout the stickers...Yea I leave my stickers on my fitteds too...

Only teams Ill wear tho:

NY Mets
NJ Devils
NJ Nets

My fav one to rock tho is the devils, cuz the mets is NY not jerz, they just my pick if we talkin baseball, and the nets suck. But the devils are straight jersey and they a badass team.

Only thing tho is lotta the devils gear is all red and I dont wear no shit thats majority red like that, shit aint cool to do in alotta hoods out here. Its a long time since I rocked a fitted tho anyways, these days I cant be wearin my hair down or my kid just pulls the fuck outta it so I aint gotta worry bout that lately anyways so i guess its all good.

When I was a kid I use to want a penguins fitted so bad cuz i really liked the colors. I never got it tho cuz that shit was like 15 bucks back then, way too expensive for my folks to afford.

Once I made a NJ Devils shirt tho, back when they won the stanley cup and i was a lil kid, getin a shirt was outa the question so I took a white fruit of the loom T and drew on it with a red and a black Sharpie. It had a red wings logo with a big X over it and then some Devils shit too, thats all i remember, I was reppin jersey hard as fuck in my ghetto-ass devils T as a kid tho lol.

or those who come from places that have no sports teams. I was born in North West Arkansas. What NFL team was I supposed to root for? or people who live in Nevada? Maine? Sometimes you don't have anyone and you just gotta make a stand and pick one.

I have more respect for people who rep their home town team despite them sucking. Nothing more pathetic than having a "play off team" as a second team.

I support two teams: New Zealand and anybody playing Australia ;)

Hey Fawkes :D, seeing as how I haven't moved out of this shithole town I live in... I'll give you that argument. Like I said, however, the Indians, Browns, Cavs, and Blue Jackets will always be my teams despite where I end up living. So yeah, I'd root for the "home" team if I moved, but never anywhere near as hard as I would my REAL home teams. And in regards to the shitty YM necklace... I certainly understand that Lil' Wayne would have to be accepting of the shitty logo since they pay him out the ass, but you definitely don't have to wear that necklace. And if you do... don't flaunt your BoSox fitted just before you flaunt that necklace. It looks VERY MUCH like you're saying "got my Red Sox hat and my Yankees necklace!" Mixed signals and what not. Booooo.

Khadijah... I wasn't so much referring to jerseys, I was definitely referring more to the fitteds, but I figured I'd lump all sports apparel together as you get a few random shirts here and there as well. I used the example of hip hop culture more because you see the fitteds predominantly in that culture and I credit hip hop influence with the burst of suburban white kids trying to fit in with the city kids. I could be way off, but that's how I see it. I'm definitely a fan of fitteds, but I choose to rep MY home teams while stayin fresh and stylin rather than some random city such as OKC just because Durant's got swag. Also... most people reppin LA hats (around here) have probably never even BEEN to LA. And I'm not just talkin Lakers, I mean Kings too. Detroit??? Who reps Detroit except people FROM Detroit???

Ugh... I just don't get it. I guess I'm a bitter jaded curmudgeon.

Oh yeah... and Kenickie, I got no beef if you don't have a team around you and have to choose one so long as you don't jump ship on your team after you've spent some time as a fan.

It's not like Wayne just got signed to a label and is rockin their shit, he runs Young Money so I'm sure he played a huge part in decidin wether or not to use the Yankees logo for the YM logo. Just another reason he's a fuckin lame.
