A new study found in the Journal of Advanced Nursing explains the act of splitting pills may alter medications and potentially harm those taking them.

Splitting pills is common among health professionals as well as patients, typically when trying to reduce negative side effects from certain medications.

Belgian scientists explain that split pills may alter dosage requirements by at least 15 percent. Even with the help of a pill splitting machine, recommended dosage levels varied by up to 25 percent.

For the study, pills were split using scissors, knives, and machines designed to split pills. After being split, each piece of pill was weighed and compared to original pill weight.

Many doctors have suggested splitting of pills as a method to make pills easier to take for patients and to reduce costs of buying medications.

This study shows that pill splitting is not recommended by experts. Even when suggested or performed by a doctor, split pills can be drastically different than recommended dosage levels.

How do you not believe this?? I can actually attest for this as I pass a variety of prescribed medication to clients and we actually use a mechanical pill cutter. The cuts always seem to be jagged and not precise. This leaves me to believe as well that the doses would not be cut 50/50 precisely.

This is the most retarded article. I dont believe it for a second.
Theres a certain amount of a chemical you need for it to affect you, so if you take too little it wont work. But i dno wheres they have farted the 15% from =D.

most medications won't matter if take a 60% half off day and the 40% half the next

if insurance wasn't so fucked people could afford their medication

yes but it's the medications that are important in exact dosages such as lithium or seizure meds like depakote etc etc..

It depends on the drug. I know that my valium doesn't break exactly in half, but since it is one of the less potent benzo's it doesn't matter much. If my 10mg pill breaks into 4 and 6, it's not that big of a deal from day to day.

isnt this just cause pills arent made perfectly symmetrically? id assume its obv that one side may have a higher concentration of a drug and splitting a pill doesnt result in a 50/50 drug split

I assume this would be common sense to most people. Another money-well-spent government/medical study. Oh what can we waste money on today?
