splitting peyote clusters??

i was given a few peyote cacti recently and i want to spread this beautiful cactus about, the ones iv been given are clusters about 10 inches across of maybe 20 1 inch peyotes, how can i safely split these apart so i can give some to friends and family to grow?? can i? or will it fuck my cacti up?
