Speeding vs. law enforcement discussion

^over here (aus) sleep desprived driving has had much cautiounary advertisements.

your thread subject matter is the connection between driving fast and danger, yet your questions in this thread are about the attitude given by law enforcement. which is it?

imo, people who repeatedly get speeding fines are just too impatient and/or stupid to figure out that simply leaving earlier is the better alternative.

And even if it did, Oh well. I die. It happens. You know hat happens when an airplane crashes? Everyone dies. We cannot prevent every death.

no one is suggesting that one can prevent EVERY death, but responsible driving will prevent some.

your attitude to life is sickening. by getting behind the wheel you ARE responsible for not only your life, but every other one you cross paths with on the road. irresponsible drivers like you are getting no respect from me. in fact, you people enrage me more than pedophiles.

I drive a German turbocharged performance car. Speed everyday. Own a Valentine 1. Never get tickets.

Never drive drugged, though.

I enrage you more than pedophiles?

Wow. I am trying to avoid taking that as a personal attack, but I am struggling. If you think I am more of a problem than a pedophile, then you are one sick twisted motherfucker. I have never hurt anyone, let alone a child. You are a seriously disturbed individual.

And where do you get off calling me stupid? Speeding isn't about getting there faster, it is about driving at a reasonable speed and getting hassled by the cops for it.

Your post reeks of arrogance. If you are so smart, then RESPOND TO MY POINTS INSTEAD OF LAUNCHING A NASTY AD HOMINUM ATTACK.

Try this, it is a fill in the blank. "Driving 80 MPH on a 3 lane interstate highway in dry weather is a dangerous act because _____________"

Can you do this, or will you just ignore it like everyone else has?

Keep in mind that some states do have speed limits that are 80 mPH or close to it, as do other countries, AND THEY HAVE NO HIGHER INCIDENCE OF ACCIDENTS!

Fjones, I read your posts and this is what I see

You seem angry, pissed off, and furious.

The society we live in isnt perfect, but i'm sure it has more important concerns that your desire to reach your destination a few minutes early.

And to add to that I think that if you think this way about speeding you probably dont have alot of driving experience. I say that because when I was 18 years old I would think the exact same thing.

Keep in mind that the rules and laws of our society arent perfect, but most of them, specially concerning driving cars, are made for the greater good.

If you think you are better than everyone else than I dont know what its worth to argue with your 'points'

Oh and one last thing... North America has the luxury of having many drag strips and circuits made for speeding, you should try one of those.

your attitude to life is sickening. by getting behind the wheel you ARE responsible for not only your life, but every other one you cross paths with on the road. irresponsible drivers like you are getting no respect from me.

I agree 100%

I seem angry, pissed off, and furious? You would be too if you were placed lower than a pedophile on the social ladder.

I am simply raising some points to support my argument. I am passionate about this topic, and I am thorough. I have actually researched facts and data. What you perceive as anger is actually my passion for the topic.

What I am angry about, however, is the personal attacks people make. What I am angry about is that people IGNORE ALMOST EVERY POINT I MAKE.

I get frustrated when people commit almost every logical fallacy in responding to my post. it frustrates me that when people don't have a good rebuttal to an argument, they attack either me (the arguer), or they attack some minute detail of my post while missing everything else.

Also, I have driven almost 200,000 miles. I STATED THIS IN ONE OF THE POSTS. SO, you are wrong, I am an experienced driver.

If Speeding is so dangerous, why haven't I caused an accident?

If I am such an irresponsible driver, WHY HAVEN'T I CAUSED AN ACCIDENT?

MAYBE it is because SPEEDING IS NOT A MAJOR FACTOR IN MOST HIGHWAY ACCIDENTS!

If two cars are in an accident because one of them was tailgating the other, then TAILGATING is the primary cause of the accident, not speeding! Two cars can speed 200 feet apart from each other without ANY threat to the safety of either car or anyone else. That is just a simple fact of physics.

The SPEED TRAPS themselves are dangerous because everyone slams on their brakes, including some asshole who has to abruptly slow down to 15 under the limit, causing a chain reaction that results in near collisions and traffic delays.

I seem angry, pissed off, and furious? You would be too if you were placed lower than a pedophile on the social ladder. .

You were even before you were placed lower than a pedophile

Also, I have driven almost 200,000 miles. I STATED THIS IN ONE OF THE POSTS. SO, you are wrong, I am an experienced driver. .

Experience doesnt come only with milleage but with age and life experience

If Speeding is so dangerous, why haven't I caused an accident?
.

Statistical anomaly

If I am such an irresponsible driver, WHY HAVEN'T I CAUSED AN ACCIDENT?

Luck. but luck has a habit of running out

And where do you get off calling me stupid? Speeding isn't about getting there faster, it is about driving at a reasonable speed and getting hassled by the cops for it.

Your beligerence when defining the term "reasonable speed" is what makes you stupid.

Try this, it is a fill in the blank. "Driving 80 MPH on a 3 lane interstate highway in dry weather is a dangerous act because _____________"

How about, "Driving 80MPH on a 3 lane interstate highway with a maximum legal speed of 60 MPH in dry weather is a dangerous act because you're breaking the flow of traffic at speeds which severely narrow both your reaction times and stopping distance should an unexpected event occur."

Keep in mind that some states do have speed limits that are 80 mPH or close to it, as do other countries, AND THEY HAVE NO HIGHER INCIDENCE OF ACCIDENTS!

This was covered earlier in the thread. Safety is increased where the speed is regulated, and it doesn't matter whether this is 60MPH or 70MPH as long as it is consistant. If you want to increase the speed limits in your areas, follow amorroark's advice or move to somewhere where it is higher.

which severely narrow both your reaction times and stopping distance should an unexpected event occur."

Right on, unexpected being the key word here.

I want to add that where I live a few years ago, highway patrol went on a strike for almost a year, they stopped giving speeding tickets.

The death toll raised significantly. Once they started giving tickets again the death toll dropped by over 16% almost instantly, a year after it had dropped by 23%

and to answer your earlier, in my relatively few years on the road on both a motercycle and in a car, i do not speed nor do i ever drive/ride on any substances.

i've had one speeding ticket when i was on my motorcycle learners license where i was not paying enough attention. it was less than 10kph over the limit.

unlike you, i learnt my lesson.

Your beligerence when defining the term "reasonable speed" is what makes you stupid.

Really? So in Michigan 75 MPH is a reasonable speed but in Maryland it is reckless? Keep calling me stupid if it makes you feel better. There is a 99% chance that you are not as smart as I am, but do whatever you need to do to inflate your self-esteem. Your personal attacks as a moderator disgust me.

Newsflash pal, in a 60 MPH Zone, most people are going faster than 60 MPH, so actually, going 60 MPH would be interrupting the flow of traffic. You just presented a case for why going the speed limit is dangerous. Well done sir

This is just False. There are roads where speed is not regulated, and they are just as safe.

Stopping distance !???

So, in the event that I encounter a stop sign on an interstate highway, I should be driving slowly? When the hell do you ever need to abruptly STOP completely from highway speed while on the highway? Events happen that cause us to decelerate to an eventual stop, but they don't usually require an immediate stop.

You know, every year hundreds of people crash their fancy Porsche of BMW on the Autobahn too....

So? According to the people arguing against me here, the autobahn should be a dangerous road with lots of crashes. Yet that isn't the case.

I didn't read the whole thread but dude-after 26 speeding tickets you were obviously driving too fast to see even ONE of those officers trying to catch speeders--therefore (IMO) you were driving too fast to have seen a deer, or someone in your blind spot, etc... thats what seems dangerous to me. i would suggest you start paying better attention to your surroundings.

This is interesting, and I would like to learn more about it.

What if the car in front of you has a mechanical problem and abruptly goes in your way?

That would stop you for good...

Sorry if my use of the word "stupid" offends you, but when someone repeatedly gets fined for a certain behaviour and makes no changes to said behaviour, they are not displaying signs of being very bright.

stop sign? don't be absurd.

what if there is a car broken down? what if an animal runs across your path? what if another car loses control for any reason? what if something falls off the back of a truck?

these are just some of the possible unexpected situation that can occur on a highway, and they not unusual.

Come on. Seriously?

When you drive, where do you look? I look at the ROAD. That is why I don't get into accidents. That is why I have dodged countless careless drivers, avoided many deer, and stopped in time whenever I needed to stop.

The reason I do not see the cops is that I am NOT LOOKING SIDEWAYS WHEN I DRIVE! They hide way off in the bushes!

If speeding were so dangerous, why do they HIDE? If they came out in plain sight, people would not speed! By hiding, they are encouraging speeding, and they show that they are only interested in CATCHING speeders, not stopping them.

Yes, I have 26 tickets, and I have driven almost 200,000 miles. So I get a ticket every 8000 miles. Most of them are at night, when I simply cannot spot a police car with its lights off hiding in the bushes.

Look, if you are going to call me stupid, you really should spell words correctly. Also, you should look up the definition of stupid, as you do not seem to know it. Getting those speeding tickets doesn't make me stupid, it makes me stubborn.

If a car is broken down, I DRIVE AROUND IT, as I have done DOZENS OF TIMES WITHOUT INCIDENT! If I had to stop, I have managed to stop! I don't understand what you are confused about. I have had animals run across my path many times, and I have never hit them. I use my reflexes and vision and instincts to avoid the collision.

If something falls off the back of a truck, I dodge it. This has happened also. I once had to dodge 5 loose tires that fell from a truck. WHY WOULD IO EVER SLAM ON MY BRAKES AND COME TO A COMPLETE STOP? That risks causing an accident! I just avoid the obstacle. One time there was a couch in the road. I drove around it. What's the big deal!
