i've heard of rubbing speed into your gum, but i've never seen anyone doing it. how effective is this method and how to do it properly?
 
I think that rubbing speed into your gum would be a stupid thing to do. Speed is bad for all soft tissues in your mouth. This is why you see the receeding (spelling?) gum line at persons which has abused this substance.

Cocaine is very often rubbed into gums to create a numbness in the mouth.

Take care of your mouth and teeth.
