What's a reasonable size plot of land to grow enough to have a viable yield?

Depends how many you want I suppose. I used to get 2-300 pods from 5 Square metres of soil using a multi headed variety.
That allowed me a yearly 'treat' without building up a significant habit (come close a few times mind you).

No need to, they're perfectly legal to grow in the UK. Even my cunty neighbour who grassed me up for growing weed never complained about the poppies (probably because he's too stupid to know what I was doing with them).

Been meaning to ask you a few questions about this for a while @TheUltimateFixx (if I haven't already).
1. What seeds did you start off with?
2. Do you refine the raw opium to make a more smokable product?
3. What yield do you usually get from your plot?
4. Is it really worth the hassle as opposed to just brewing up the pods?

I grew Giganteums a few years ago when I had some pods that contained the right alkaloids, and presumably the seeds from within those pods could grow viable plants. I tried 2 or 3 times, but I couldn't get them to ooze opium though, not sure what was wrong, but I didn't get more than a bogey's worth per pod. So something was obviously amiss.
Trying again this year with a small hens and chicks crop. Planning to stagger the planting stages so that I can hopefully get a decent amount of pods over the course of the year. Rather optimistically sowed 4 little seed planters last weekend, for indoor germination. It's probably true that they need 20c to germinate as nothing's happening yet, and I've already told myself that I'm not using the heating again now this year due to the cost. Now that things have warmed up sufficiently that it's not essential and layering up is comfortable enough. Although I might put the heating on for a few hours in one room just to give the seeds 20C and see if i can get them to germinate very early.
Edit: I put them in the kitchen last night while I was using the oven, and the temp was around 19C for 90 minutes or so. One of the planters is showing visible new signs of tiny new seedlings this morning. I'll keep on using the oven heat method for the others to see if I can get them to germinate early too.

Were you cutting them too deep perchance? You have to scratch them so lightly with a sharp blade or the sap oozes inwards and can't be collected.

1. I grow 2 varieties, one was sold to me as Persian White and has especially large seed heads ; the other one is a type of Turkish Pepperbox. Both are commercial high-bred high-alkaloid strains (there's garden varieties of both) and no I didn't acquire these legally. XD
2. yes I refine the raw latex to chandu myself.
3. a few grams only per harvest but that'll do for some nice smokes for the winter plus a small bottle of laudanum tincture.
4. It really is quite a faff especially for such small quantities, but to me it's worth it. Yes I make opium tea from the pods but smoked it just REALLY hits different.
I also just am very intrigued with the whole process and found it fascinating to learn. It feels quite neat to consume the stuff in a way that almost nobody alive these days still practices. Also I do own a genuine antique Chinese opium pipe and lamp (which wasn't cheap to find still in usable condition and took a long time hunting specialist sales). They're my pride and joy (pipe is tortoiseshell with white jade end pieces, lamp is chased brass and glass) and it's just a very satisfying overall experience to use the traditional way with the traditional paraphernalia. I feel very privileged to get to be able to do it.

Maybe yeah. I'll bear that in mind if I try that again. I probably won't be able to grow enough pods to make latex collection worthwhile and will stick to trying brews from the pods.
@TheUltimateFixx Any idea if Hens and Chicks seeds brought legally and openly from an online seed retailer will produce adult pods which have those precious good alkaloids?
I heard that hens and chicks papaver somniferum tend to have high alkaloid content and that's why I'm trying this variety, but I'm not sure if you need to get the seeds from special sources. Not sure if the 'garden variety' are selected so as not to have significant alkaloids.

Never heard of that brand.
And yes garden variety papaver somniferum of course are STILL opium poppies (as is the wild original) and so will contain all those active compounds. It's just that the varieties used for commercial drug production have been bred selectively to contain much higher amounts and these won't be for sale legally ANYWHERE.

I took a stroll with doggo today, my preferred route blocked for 2 years for "construction" and the path I went i was dewy eyes. 12 years this summer, on the site of an old tower block did all these poppies bloom. Oh it was lovely wasteland for some years, before that houses and flats now it is all weird warehousing and from what i can work out, weird weapon machinery and electronics. Is easy to read by what shot up first, after the poppies. Never mind. It's sinister. These huge warehouses with tiny car parks and few workers. Doesn't make much sense, oh, pharmaceuticals.

Isn't everything a mind over matter matter really?
I would know myself very well by now. I know from the experience of the other week when I had no money, no pods left and I'd sacked off my px. How very ill I was without anything. I paid double for my postage soon as I could order them. They work for me. I'm not after a buzz. I just want to not fee l I'll and have that edge taken away of the anxiety I suffer . These pods work for me.

Yeah, when I'd pick poppies from run down gardens they'd make me feel "nice" but no matter how many I used I couldn't get a nod on. Felt like the first alerts of an opiate high, but generally not that good. I think I need to grow my own.
When I'd read about poppy tea tasting FOUL and having to force a dark mixture down, I was perplexed when mine was the colour of piss and tasted like grass. And yes, it was definitely papaver somniferum.
I god slightly better results eating them whole, but no-one do this as the seeds are high in protein. Gave myself gout a few times before I realised what it was.

I highly recommend making proper “extracted-opium” if make “real” doesn’t work, it’s much, much better compared to just using pods for tea, there are numerous reasons for that. Refine to your liking and possibility according to available solvents & equipment, depending on type of product let it cure for some time and enjoy as it gets tastier ans tastier.

Cheap one for example, spend a bit more and they are temp controllable.

Yeah, I looked into propogators over the weekend and found that they were reasonably priced for ones that add 8C of warmth. Went and got one straight away. Hopefully this might make a crucial difference to help extend the growing season until the temperature starts to warm up. So far only one out of 4 seed planters has clearly germinated. I will have to keep an eye on things.
