First of all, I realise this is Off Topic. But I think it is interesting nonetheless.
I was out with one of my non-pill mates last night, having our usual midweek beer and bullshit session. As it usually does, we got on to music. We got onto the topic of songs that haven’t aged, or songs that were particularly significant, groundbreaking, or unique. In particular, we stayed away from electronic music generally, so the electronic content is much lower than my natural bias.
Well, the beers flowed, debate ensued and there much much poo poo-ing, grandstanding, table thumping and general hysterics. So we knocked out a list (on a few napkins from home bar) of some of the ones we agreed on. Bear with me. The longer the list got, the more we realised we hadn’t even touched the tip of the iceberg. And it’s more likely to piss people off for the good songs we left out, rather than the ones we could remember. I also realise it is terribly self indulgent. But here goes nothin
Rolling Stones- "Miss You" "Start Me Up" "Satisfaction" "Sympathy for the Devil"
Faith No More- "Epic"
James Brown- "Papa’s got a brand new bag"
U2- "Sunday Bloody Sunday"
Pink Floyd- "Wish you were here"
XTC- "Dear God"
The Troggs- "Wild Thing"
Stone Roses- "Fools Gold"
Arethra Franklin- "Respect"
Blondie- "Heart of Glass"
Moby - "Go"
Led Zepplin- "Whole Lotta Love"
REM- "POP song 89" "End of the World"
Curtis Mayfield- "People get ready"
NWA- "Express Yourself"
The Smiths- "How soon is now"
Jackson Five- "I want you back"
Smashing Pumpkins- "Today"
Iggy Pop- "Lust for life"
Frank Sinatra- "New York" "My Way"
Dee Lite- "Groove is in the Heart"
Marvin Gaye- "Heard it through the Grapevine" "Sexual Healing" "What’s going on"
Prince- "When doves cry" "Sign o’ the times"
The Doors- "The End"
New Order- "Blue Monday"
Nirvana- "Come as you are"
John Lennon- "Imagine"
Womack and Womack- "Teardrops"
Creedence Clearwater Revival- "Down on the Corner"
The Cure- "A Forest"
Hendrix- "Hey Joe"
David Bowie- "Heroes"
Martha Reeves and the Vandellas- "Dancin in the street"
Pearl Jam- "Better Man"
Violent Femmes- "Blister in the Sun"
The Who- "Generation"
RadioHead- "Karma Police"
Diana Ross and the Supremes- "Stop"
Talking Heads- "Days go by"
The Animals- "The House of the rising sun"
Sex Pistols- "Anarchy in the UK"
Bob Marley- "No woman no crime"
Run DMC- "Walk this Way"
The Beatles- "Twist and Shout" "Revolution 69"
Joy Division- "Love will tear us apart"
Dusty Springfield- "Son of a preacher man"
The Clash- "London Calling"
this list is not meant to be conclusive- just some shit me and a mate put down over a few beers. This is obviously biased by age, gender, and musical preference. We need more soul, funk, blues and earlier content. Anyone help?
But I believe it is relevant as our musical taste often speaks alot about a person, and defines them through the environments they expose themselves to with their music. "Window to the soul" or something like that.
these are the songs I could hear in ten years without thinking "fack, I’m old", hence I think they are timeless. Post away..
I'll add suggestions that seem fair and post it on BL2000 after you guys have finished with it.
