Music has been a huge driver/motivator for me. I thought I'd share this song that really helped me my first few days sober. This song had me weeping one minute and smiling the next. Steve Earle is a long time recovered addict and one of my personal hero's.

I am not a "Christian" (though I place Christ up there with many other great examples of living a spiritual life and taking action over words) but this song really rings true. Try not to let the whole "God" word flip you up. "God" is whatever you want it to be.

"God Is God"

I believe in prophecy.
Some folks see things not everybody can see.
And,once in a while, they pass the secret along to you and me.

And I believe in miracles.
Something sacred burning in every bush and tree.
We can all learn to sing the songs the angels sing.

Yeah, I believe in God, and God ain't me.

I've traveled around the world,
Stood on mighty mountains and gazed across the wilderness.
Never seen a line in the sand or a diamond in the dust.

And as our fate unfurls,
Every day that passes I'm sure about a little bit less.
Even my money keeps telling me it's God I need to trust.

And I believe in God, but God ain't us.

God,in my little understanding, don't care what name I call.
Whether or not I believe doesn't matter at all.

I receive the blessings.
That every day on Earth's another chance to get it right.
Let this little light of mine shine and rage against the night.

Just another lesson
Maybe someone's watching and wondering what I got.
Maybe this is why I'm here on Earth, and maybe not.

But I believe in God, and God is God.

I basically think this is his story of him coming to terms of his understanding of his personal HP via the steps.

I equate this song to my recovery

"I Can See Clearly Now"

I can see clearly now the rain is gone.
I can see all obstacles in my way.
Gone are the dark clouds that had me blind.
It's gonna be a bright (bright)
bright (bright) sunshiny day.
It's gonna be a bright (bright)
bright (bright) sunshiny day.

Oh, yes I can make it now the pain is gone.
All of the bad feelings have disappeared.
Here is that rainbow I've been praying for.
It's gonna be a bright (bright)
bright (bright) sunshiny day.

(ooh...) Look all around, there's nothing but blue skies.
Look straight ahead, there's nothing but blue skies.

I can see clearly now the rain is gone.
I can see all obstacles in my way.
Here is that rainbow I've been praying for.
It's gonna be a bright (bright)
bright (bright) sunshiny day.
It's gonna be a bright (bright)
bright (bright) sunshiny day.
It's going to be a bright (bright)
bright (bright) sunshiny day.
Yeah, hey, it's gonna be a bright (bright) bright (bright)
sunshiny day.

An obvious classic here

Personally, the only Eminem album I really ever got big into was Infinity.. but this song is good.

Love this song:

"Pocket Full Of Rain"

Boys out on the corner
The way they were before
But me I don’t go down there
With my money anymore
Yeah I can still remember when
It used to kill the pain
But I woke up every mornin’
With a pocketful of rain

Ain’t like it’s been easy
I been up and down
And lately I can’t seem to keep
My chin up off the ground
But I’d rather eat a pound of dirt than
Taste that taste again
And a world of hurt is better than
A pocket full of rain

Talk about the devil and up he jump
Down beside the levee on a hollow stump
Shakin’ like a window girl in Amsterdam
I don’t wanna be no closer than I am
To tell you he’s the devil
‘Cause I know all his names
And I know all his faces well
He’s the devil just the same
He’ll look you in the eye and lie
And promise anything
Leave you cold and empty as
A pocket full of rain

Put this one into the "Never want to go back there" category:

shoulda learned better,
I'm old enough to know.
Slippin' and slidin', feelin' low.

Yeah it's a sit back at best,
A shame for sure, babe.
Slipping and slidin', feelin' low.

Now I'm waking up feelin' bad again.
I'm losing patience with my only friend.
Why do I try my luck?
I should never touch the stuff,

but it's shouldn't make any difference mama,
As long as I keep up appearances, Lord.

I've been workin' too hard,
I need some time at home,
Slippin' and slidin', and feelin' low.

Darling I just need a little comfortin',
I ain't seen the sunrise since I don't know when.
Days getting longer, nights getting cold.
Slippin' and slidin', feelin' low.
I'm a slippin' and slidin', peekin' and hidin',
I'm slippin' and slidin', feelin' low.

Eminem has some good references to recovery in his most recent album, Marshal Mathers LP2 and of course his album titled Recovery.

As far as I know it's not about recovery but it might as well be, pick your version...

You with the sad eyes
Don't be discouraged
Oh I realize
It's hard to take courage
In a world full of people
You can lose sight of it all
And the darkness inside you
Can make you feel so small

But I see your true colors
Shining through
I see your true colors
And that's why I love you
So don't be afraid to let them show
Your true colors
True colors are beautiful,
Like a rainbow

Show me a smile then,
Don't be unhappy, can't remember
When I last saw you laughing
If this world makes you crazy
And you've taken all you can bear
You call me up
Because you know I'll be there

And I'll see your true colors
Shining through
I see your true colors
And that's why I love you
So don't be afraid to let them show
Your true colors
True colors are beautiful,
Like a rainbow

Killswitch Engage "New Awakening"

Run the race that will lead to nowhere fast
Trapped in the haze of this mindless false reality
Wandering a path laid out by fools
That they call "progression" where chaos rules

There is more to life than this
We are more than just this flesh
We are alive and our time has come
For a new awakening

Come death, come suffering, I will not live in fear
In this fleeting life where time escapes us
The path of least resistance is a slow, quiet death
I'd rather burn out than fade away

There is more to life than this
We are more than just this flesh
We are alive and our time has come
For a new awakening

I would rather die than live my life in fear
Out of step, no regrets in the new awakening

I will not live in fear
Live life with no regrets
I will not live in fear
I will not live in fear

There is more to life than this
We are more than just this flesh
We are alive and our time has come
For a new awakening

I'd rather burn out than fade away
