something watches

i feel something watching from
the corner of the room
some eyes some teeth some tentacles
some malice fresh exhumed

i know it waits for me to move
it waits till i take flight
then lurches as i try to run
my legs stuck thick with fright

if i can reach the candle stick
and light it up first strike
the light may scare the windigo
then ill escape its bite

and as i leap out of my bed
i feel its breath behind
my fingers fumble in the dark
a single match to find

a strike a flame a candle lit
a beacon in the black
yet nothing comes in hissing bounds
stays still my old coat rack

but light it brings me no comfort
fear beating through my head
i think ill leave the candle lit
and leave it by my bed

what is it in a simple flame
that makes our fears flee
if something horrid was in here
i'd rather wouldn't see

is it not a strange remedy
to brighten up the night
for if there's nothing in the dark
surely,
there's nothing in the light?
