The ergot alkaloid biosynthetic pathway has been pretty thoroughly worked out, I believe. It would certainly be possible for a biochemist to use miRNAs to knockdown the the relevant gene (or genes). The problem, as with all theoretical genetic endeavors with drug plants, is a lack of available funding.
