Some issues about the Aus Social forum

ok i never realised the difference between main social and aus social. i thought aus social was just an australian version... seems to make more sense to me but yeah anyway i understand...
i prefer to post in the aus forum because im generally going to get responses from people in australia, thus i am more likely to be able to relate to, and there is a far higher possibility that i might know them or one day meet them.
i never post in main social because the topics are often tremendously stupid, such as 'titties' or some random sentence... i had sort of developed the opinion that aus social was a little more mature (generalisation - no offence intended) as i could see it was policed more.
dont get me wrong, i agree that a certain amount of policing is necessary, but maybe not so strict. ie if in a thread, someone posts a little off topic, there is no need for a mod to post suggesting that they stay on topic, until a few more posts are made and the original topic is lost or begins to fade.

And hopefully there shouldn't be any need for intervention at all! :)

melancholic: We do try to be a little lenient, we quite often don't tell people to get back on topic unless a few people are involved... Unfortunately all too often our prompts to get back on topic are ignored, and the thread ends up being closed, eg. this one, which is just one example... The whole point of trying to keep things on topic is so that the original topic isn't lost, once it becomes lost people are more reluctant to reply to the original topic and the thread (and sometimes a good topic) dies...
In other situations we'll ask that people remain on topic straight away, because we've seen similar thread go off topic really fast, like the sydney rollcall thread (couldn't be bothered finding it, and yeah, other rollcall threads from other states degenerate too, its not just sydney, sydney was just one that had a note people just post once 'cos it was posted after a few others had been spammed)
We don't expect people to be able to know exactly what to do and what not to do, much of what can and can't be posted falls into grey areas and it comes down to our discretion to leave it or close it... And many times something which I'd have loved to close has been left open, and someone I've wanted left open had to be closed, we don't just do what we want... As Pleo said, we're trying to make sure everything is explained so that there's less need for us to do anything...
Thanks guys, and as always, keep the responces and opinions coming, and if there is ever a thread closed which you don't think should have been closed, bring it up with us (as RBB did), there may very well be something which we missed which may be a good reason to keep a particular thread open...

sometimes I think we spend more time posting about how this forum should be run as opposed to just doing it. We're all beuracrats!
Seriously, the line between appropriate moderation and over moderation is dangerously thin - lately I've been thinking we should let Social run itself - a Darwinistic approach to moderation if you will. Crap threads will die through lack of response and fall off the front page, the good threads will stay just because they are popular and people post. This will only work if people don't bump spastic threads ie the damn stoopid body hair one
 
reading threads that are 2 years old and 6 pages long is boring. let people post new threads occasionally.
I agree with nezo...there's a fine line between good moderating and over moderating.

It would be nice if nezo's theory worked, but unfortunately crap threads don't die...
A good example would be the good ol' Mu(x)kE V's Piglet thread... It went for way too long before it was closed... Bloody hell its amazing how things have changed... I wouldn't think twice about closing a thread like that now, yet back then I contributed to it...
