Synthetic cannabis, also called "spice" and "K2," was the most commonly used drug among soldiers who recently participated in an intervention program for substance use, new research finds.

The study of 368 active-duty Army personnel found that 38 percent of the participants who reported using any drug over the last 90 days said they used synthetic marijuana, whereas 14 percent of the soldiers said they used marijuana. The soldiers may have been drawn to synthetic marijuana because unlike many other drugs, it is difficult to detect in a urine test, the researchers said.

Moreover, the participants reported they perceived that synthetic cannabis was more popular among army members than among civilians.

"For every category of drug that we listed, soldiers believed that civilians use more drugs than soldiers. However, for spice, or synthetic cannabis, soldiers believed folks in the military use more than civilians," said study researcher Tom Walton, a project director at the School of Social Work at the University of Washington in Seattle.

"So that gives credence to the idea that spice is a popular drug in the military," Walton told Live Science.

Many of them would be using synthetic cannabis in the belief that they will avoid detection during drug testing, because they know that cannabis use would be detected.

From what I have seen they are correct in assuming that the spice is hard to test for. The chemicals are constantly switched making testing an expensive proposition.

Yes, this is what i have seen aswell, its simply avoiding detection.
Same concept for people who get randomly drug tested to avoid
opiates and pot, stick to stimulants because a weekend warrior
would have no worries.

Its kind of comical if you really consider how testing and laws, themselves, have affected specific drug use in the populous.

I've spoken to people that have been in the army or know people in the army. Price discussion is not allowed of course but the prices that these people pay for the stuff is outrageous. From my understanding, if the military discovers use, the soldier might as well have been using regular marijuana.

Maybe this was just propaganda but I have heard reports that synthetics like Spice and K2 can cause cardiac arrest in an otherwise healthy individual....

I honestly don't understand why they don't just smoke weed. Most soldiers will state that the army is a horrible place to be (from an inside perspective, mind). Now that I think about it if they'r dishonorably discharged they probably lose all benefits (free college tuition, etc.). I doubt they get drug tested that much too, especially when they're near battle. If I was in the Middle East I would do whatever drug(s) I wanted.

That said, those synthetic cannabinoids are notorious for (most of them) being wayyy strong. Much more healthy to smoke weed. This is notwithstanding weeds natural status.

I'm pretty sure only a few have been proven to be carcinogenic though, Slim.

When I was in, I got randomly tested around 3 times a year. Because THC can be detected for a month, using it can be difficult to get away with for long.

I've tried several synthetic cannabinoids and a few spice/incense blends though, and none of them felt like weed. To me, it was more like smoking cannabis with most of the good parts removed and the bad parts (nervousness, paranoia) amplified.

Yes, too strong, because people don't know how to dose them.
And, yes, not proven carcinogenic (yet), but reading discussions elsewhere on BL makes me think that it is only a matter of time….

It sounds like this thread title needs to be changed to "Soldiers smoke synthetic weed over real weed because it won't make them fail a drug test".

"Prefer" generally sounds like "enjoy the effects of more".

Not the case here.

From my understanding, it is better to have never joined the military at all than to have a dishonorable discharge. Apparently, it negatively affects career possibilities, among other things.
