Social Climbers

The only reason I ever status climb is to find new drug hookups.. There was one girl who wanted to fuck me and I only continued to talk to her because I knew she could get really good acid.. I was totally right, that acid was the bomb. I need to get some more....

Well, does anybody have a problem with the term "social skills"? I really don't like it. I find it wrecks the real concept that should take place in social interactions. It just doesn't sound right like I use "social skills" to meet people and get them to like me...sounds very manipulative or mechanical. There's no fucking "heart" in it.

Sure, this is semantic as hell, but it is important to "say what you mean so you can mean what you say."

I have no problem with the term. There is a line between between manipulating interactions to serve ego and to serve a better good.

I feel like this is a personal moral issue.

I may expand on this later.

i think when it comes to really forming an interpersonal bond, personality plays a bigger role, but i definitely believe that "social skills" can be learned and play a large role in our daily interactions.

Okay. That's an opinion.

The reality is we are all animals. I have yet to move into a scene or space that didn't have an informal heirarchy that people intuitively understand.

I think this is a great topic of discussion, because this kind of "highschool" kind of behavior is very common. I suppose there is some value in being able to discern a climber from a genuine person. I mean for me, climbing makes little sense, because it implys stepping onto and over others.

I would rather not do that.

Yea..my situation is kind of weird studying medicine. Using someone in my area it is more like being nicer than normal to a person while asking for study materials off their USB stick knowing that you have nothing to reciprocate with. Kind of a D-bag move I feel, and I personally try to reciprocate when possible (with at least a beer or coffee!). I also see a lot of idea taking, for instance using some clever phrase that a colleague came up with in order look better in front of the profs. I don't really ever see people really getting pushed under the bus.. more of a tug o' war between lots of slightly too arrogant people.

There is nothing wrong with asking for help or receiving something that may help you with your career but like if you slept with your boss to get a better position or if you are always kissing ass to get ahead sort of speak........

I see nothing wrong with what you've done, everyone uses something someone else has created, as long as you give credit where credit is due & as long as you are not like Bill Gates & steal other peoples ideas (thats what ive read) & he made out like a bandit.........

I've been going out to very particular places and observing these kinds of interactions from a perspective informed most recently by this thread.

I feel like Cyc is pretty much spot on.
