David Bronner, CEO of Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps of Escondido, was arrested Monday near the White House after firefighters cut him out of a steel cage.

Bronner had locked himself into the cage along with a dozen industrial hemp plants growing in pots to protest the federal government’s policy that prevent U.S. farmers from growing the crop.

According to The Washington Post, Bronner spent about three hours in the cage before being removed and arrested. He was later released.

Bronner has been a hemp activist for more than a decade. In 2009 he was arrested for trying to plant hemp seeds in front of the Drug Enforcement Administration’s headquarters in Arlington, Va.

Bronner’s Magic Soaps are America’s best-selling natural brand of soap. The company imports more than 20 tons of hemp oil per year from Canadian farmers. Bronner maintains industrial hemp contains almost no THC, the active ingredient in marijuana, and is useless as a medicinal or recreational drug.

The hemp oil is used in the soaps made by the company for a smooth lather and less drying after-feel, Bronner has said.

Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soap, a family-run soap-making business founded 153 years ago in Germany, has called Escondido home for 64 years. With annual sales of more than $50 million, the company — now run by fourth- and fifth-generation family members — donates one-third of its profits to charity.

Yeah industrial hemp is illegal in the good ole US of A (growing it is, not using the oil or cloth or soap or whatever made from it). He was probably arrested partially on that and partially on "disturbing the peace" or some other charge that the police can throw at you when they want to arrest you for no good reason.

I wonder where he got the hemp plants.

This man is for real... and about real change on the planet... a friend of MAPS..... and the community (in his 80's)

So the thing I don't get ("Now this is something I just don't get") is, if industrial hemp is illegal, is industrial poppyseed production illegal, too? I mean, fuck, you're growing P.somniferum! It's right up there on the big fucking Schedule 1!

But yet I can eat a poppyseed bagel in the states, and that's fine, but eat hempseed and you're some sort of anti-industry hippy.

^^ you can buy hempseed in the usa. that's not illegal. go check the nearest natural food store - they'll probably have hemp seed. (its a great nutrition supplement especially for us vegetarians.)
from dr bronner's site: http://www.drbronner.com/pdf/hempnutrition.pdf
originally from - "The Vote Hemp Report"
Hemp protein is also of exceptionally high quality in terms of
amino acid (AA) composition and protein structure, the latter
affecting digestibility and utilization by the human body.
Hemp protein contains all of the essential amino acids in
more nutritionally significant amounts and at a ratio closer to
"complete" sources of protein (like meat, milk and eggs) than
all other oil seeds except soy

but growing hemp plants is illegal... for some reason.

- the situation with opium poppies is a bit unclear to my knowledge. Industrial poppy cultivation has a strange history in the us of a.
its certainly not as cut and dry as hemp (with regards to clarity of law)
also isn't opium schedule 2 in the usa?

America imports all hemp seeds for eating from Canada.
They are really , really healthy - not just for the amino acid profile, but - more importantly - for the fatty acid profile.
In "Fats that Heal, Fats that Kill" by Erasmus, he says that hemp seed oil gives the ideal proportion of EFAs, in sufficient quantities that you could live healthily if hemp seeds were your only source of oil.
Flax seeds don't have everything.
No edible source except for hemp seeds has all essential fatty acids in reasonable quantities, or in good balance for human health, according to Erasmus.

That alone should be enough for the gov't to reverse their postion. coupled with the fact that the hemp plant can be used to make all sorts of things from rope to cloth, bags, sweaters, oils, natural care products (creams, shampoos, etc), textiles, bio-plastics... the list goes on and on and on...

it seems like such a no brainer
an easy way to promote a new (albeit old) industry, stateside. the usa could actually start manufacturing things again instead of importing everything.

most drug policy is so backasswards sometimes all you can do is laugh.
