Abstract Cigarette smoking increased during administration of buprenorphine, an opioid mixed agonist-antagonist, in comparison to drug-free baseline in seven heroin addicts maintained on buprenorphine for 24 days (P<0.01–0.001). Ascending buprenorphine doses (0.5–8.0 mg/day) were associated with significant increases in cigarette smoking at doses of 2.0 mg/day sc and above. Cigarette smoking during 10 days of buprenorphine maintenance at 8 mg/day was significantly higher than during the buprenorphine induction phase (P<0.01). Six subjects given placebo buprenorphine over 14 days showed no change in cigarette smoking. The placebo group self-administered heroin for 10 days, and cigarette smoking increased significantly during heroin use (P<0.001). The rate of cigarette smoking defined by intercigarette intervals was highest during the 10 days of high-dose buprenorphine maintenance or placebo plus heroin self-administration. Both groups requested significantly more cigarettes at intervals of 0–10, 11–20, and 21–30 min than during the drug-free baseline. These data confirmed previous findings that opioid agonist administration is associated with increased cigarette smoking and suggest that buprenorphine has primarily agonist effects on cigarette smoking.

I can tell you from experience that it seems ANY dopamine acting drug (ie rec drug) makes smoking cigarettes pleasurable. Actually, not even drugs; food, sex... the list goes on. :)
Great thread BTW Kasad

As long as you have an excuse to maintain your cigarette addiction that's ok ;) More power to you, JK.

I agree, cigarettes are digusting, but I find the E-cigarette to be like a pleasant version of a cigarette as it's smooth and mild tasting without being harsh. A great alternative to cigarettes IMO.

There's little better than having a huge, lovely meal, a small glass of rosé followed with a cigarette ^_^

ahhh, cigarettes. yeah. we start out with a full pack, get high, and then all of a sudden i look over at the pack, and its only got about 2-5 cigarettes in it. i have no idea how we smoke so many, but... strange, eh?

If you're stuck in situations such as in hospital with nothing to do but sit in a small garden and stare at the wall all day you generally tend to smoke as much as 50 fags if you can. I've done it before while waiting to be discharged from a hospital when I didn't have any of my posessions with me to keep me distracted.

The only time I enjoy smoking is when I've been deprived for ages and then have a fag. The headspin is somewhat nice. More relieving than nice actually when I come to think of it.

God this thread triggered so many memories of opiate days..

Opiates of any kind cause extreme craving for a cigg because of the "boost" it gives to the opiate. Get it just right and you can get zonked into the nod but smoke too much and you will get nauseous and lose everything in your belly (has happened to me countless times yet I still did it).

However I noticed when I felt that cigg nausea, I would just light a bong and be more than fine =D

Nowaday I'm at a half pack a day or so habit and I only take kratom for my anxiety which tickles opiate receptors but not as extreme as Rx opiates.

maybe the nicotine mildly helps the high..
i tend to smoke a lot.. always have.. i think it's because of the benzo and sub scripts.. obviously.
i know when i used to do street (drugs), i smoked a lot of cigarettes. but it would kill the high of a "normal" opiate, so i don't know why not with the subs.. anyway, and with benzos, i used to either forget or smoke more because i didn't feel like i already did.
man, i'm glad i don't have to go through all that, haha.

I've often wondered about the exact reason that I chain smoke on opiates, but opiates also make alot of people I know do things like eat sugary foods until they puke, and some people I know even compulsively shop when theyre high. Its as if the signal that tells you that you're satiated after a certain behavior just never gets sent out when you're high.

It probably has something to do with dopaminergic activity in the brain but not all drugs make me want to chainsmoke. DXM, shrooms, ecstasy, all sometimes make me forget that I'm a smoker at all. I have my own theory having to do with craving behavior and the NMDA receptor, but its not something thats been tested yet (to my knowledge).

Great article though! Its interesting that this article is so old because I honestly couldn't figure out for quite a while why I was smoking until I felt ill after taking oxy.

i've had that same experience. it depends on the drug, and the person.

You're right, it's to do with Dopamine acting in the pleasure center. And DXM, mushrooms and MDMA don't have much of the same effect as there's a lot more activity with Serotonin (but there is still activation of Dopamine).

Yeah, thats what I figured too, opiates (and, I think, alcohol) cause indirect activation of DA in the pleasure centers, hence, chainsmoking, but I still feel as if glutamate/NMDA receptors factor into it somehow too. Or rather, that NMDA receptors have to do with craving in general, not just craving for cigarettes. Dopamine would certainly contribute to the rewarding feeling brought about by cigarettes, but my hypothesis is that excitatory glutamate transmission causes the actual feeling of craving, and somehow drugs which lead to repetitive, compulsive behaviors prevent these signals from being shut off, so that there is a repeated urge to keep smoking (or eating, or shopping), and the dopamine ensures that these behaviors continue to be rewarding.

I'm not 100% on this but I think NMDA antagonists indirectly activate Dopamine in some way.. Which could explain your assumption. Would be worth looking up. Check out Ketamine's Neuropharmacology perhaps.
