So I applied at Mcdonalds..

This world is getting ridiculous everyone is getting so tight lucky I have a good boss I'm 19 and earn £9p/h

It does sound like you are overqualified. For (sorry) shitty jobs like mcdonalds they really want people with either no experience, no ambition, or are illegal immigrants who have way less rights.

From my experience with a ton of different entry level jobs, I would try to be a busser in a family restaurant. That way you can work into bartending and serving. I know the tips in UK aren't as good as the USA, but they have to be ok, right? Or am I way off base?

They won't hire you if you're overqualified, which is easy to be when it's McDonald's you're considering...

This.
I had a co-worker who helped a guy get a job once by having him remove his college from his resume.

The turnover rate in fast-food is higher than any other industry. While the food itself has been designed to be as user-friendly as possible (capable of being operated by the average half-wit), training still costs $$.
Why hire someone you know can find a better job any day? Better to go with the deadbeat kid who has no aspirations for career mobilization.

Anyway, surely those 2 years at "a local small supermarket" are better than 2 days of minimum-wage McPoison.
I really wish a McPlague would strike dead every customer and employee of that evil corporation. I respect "freedom of choice" and all, but some things are just sacred/unholy.

One thing you're overlooking: the economy in the US and Europe is still pretty shitty and unemployment is still a problem. Thus, that used-to-be-easy-to-get McDonalds job is a fucking bitch to get now. It's the same in just about every field out there. There's like 5 people looking for each job that's available. All things being equal, and in the case of an entry level McDonalds job they probably are, you have an 80% chance of NOT getting the job. And believe me, I know soooo well how bad that sucks....

So- it's not you, it's the dismal economic times we're all dealing with now :\

Must be nice to have this "dole" option you speak of.

Seriously, consider yourself lucky. I worked at a restaurant similar to MacD's in the US when I was 16, was the shittiest, most disgusting job I've ever had. Plus everything in MacD's is toxic waste. If you want a restaurant job, at least get one at a decent place where you can eat the food without getting cancer.
