So How Many Genders are There?

According to my mind there are three human genders. Male, female and hermaphrodite. I know hermaphrodites sometimes have sexual traits that favor one sex over the other but I saw a case once where the person had both sets of genitals but decided to become a man; they already dressed like a man and preferred that even though they grew up as/being treated as a female. This case was on TV a long time ago, like in the mid-90s when I was growing up

Anyway that convinced me that there are three genders. I won't try to convince people that this is a fact since it's rare, but that doesn't mean anything to me. There could be other ways to look at it I suppose

Sexual characteristics exist on a spectrum. With the majority pretty much all on one side or the other, but with a minority somewhere in between.

Id argue though that doesn't make these people a third sex. It means they're in between the existing two.

Id also argue that true human hemaphrodism doesn't really exist. Because as far as I know (and please correct me if this is mistaken), nobody has 2 functioning sets of genitals. As such self fertilization is impossible in humans.

I've heard a lot of people insist there are more than two, but nobody ever actual has an answer.
Anybody in the know - or who identifies as any of the following - can you help me out?

So, all I can think of is:

1) Trans-Woman (MTF transgender) - but wouldn't you just consider your gender as "female"? Personally I would think of you as just female rather than "trans-female"?
2) Trans-Man (as above)
3) Gender Fluid - but doesn't this mean you identify as both at different times?
4) Gender Nonbinary - but don't you just identify as neither?

Anything I'm missing?

There’s a college, I think Berkeley that is teaching kids that there is something like 72 different genders. This nonsense needs to stop. Just because you identify as a non-binary turtle doesn’t make you brave, it makes you fucking annoying. Don’t feed me your bullshit about you being an astral divination that came to earth to speak to the water foul creatures.

Nasty smurfs

🧙‍♂️

Lol I agree man. i live in Berkeley for 5 years. I would hang right outside the campus on telegraph and shattuck and ON the campus.... all downtown berkeley.... and shit man I'm certainly progressive but some parts of the county are WAYYYYYYYY to progressive and shit..... that's all I'm gonna say.

there are major downsides to the progressiveness in the SF area.... it has one of the WORST homeless problems in the country... and it's REALLLY fucking bad if you've ever been to downtown SF.....

I’m sure somebody must have mentioned this somewhere but it still seems very confusing to many:

Sex = a BIOLOGICAL term referring to a dyad= 2 (based on chromosomes and, in general, primary sexual characteristics like gonads).

Gender = a SOCIOLOGICAL term referring to a spectrum = as many as you like (based on adherence to, and self-perception in light of, socially constructed norms)

It is a bit confusing because the socially constructed norms that make up gender more than likely have some basis in biology.

A lot of people seem to be confusing gender with sex.
Your SEX is how you are biologically born (basically, what's between your legs)
Your GENDER is what you identify as

This. Perfect response.

Well this person did have functioning genitals on both sides. It came out both sides when urinating

Well I'll be.. This comment prompted me to do some googling and it looks like I was wrong. I mean I still can't find any evidence of anyone ever having been born with the potential to self fertilize. But such a criteria might not actually matter that much. It was my understanding that human hermaphroditism in even the sense of 2 functional (I meant function I'm the reproductive sense) wasn't a real thing. But self fertility aside it looks like it is.

Seems to be super crazy rare though. There's a lot of other intersex conditions that are much more common.

I continue to be amazed at the number of ways people can develop,

FYI the term hermaphrodite is considered derogatory for many people.

I asked this question in CEPS about a year ago but nooone gave me an honest answer or any answer for that matter,

How triggered do you get when the doctor asks you your preferred pronoun?

I was hoping today I'd NOT be praying to see the mushroom cloud........seems all hope is gone yet again.

There was a time that the word 'gender' was directly related to the biological sex you were born as - of which there are only two.

However, 'gender' seems to have become a cultural term that can be interpreted any way an individual wishes.

AFAIC, this is a load of bollocks (or lack of). There are still only two biological sexes and these are stated on your birth certificate. I realise there are some mutations that result in the wrong sex being assigned at birth which then becomes apparent later on in life, in which case the birth certificate should be amended accordingly.

But it shouldn't be determined by how you 'identify'. You can identify as a fuckin slug for all I care, but you're still either male or female. Even post op transexuals are still just male or female with body modifications. Perhaps there will come a time when science can completely switch sexes, or create true hermaphrodites that produce both sperm and eggs with fully functioning male and female genitals and capable of giving birth. But even then, there will still only be two true genders - even if some people possess both.

And this is just fuckin ridiculous:
