I have heard smoking raw opium that you have grown yourself is a waste. My question is, is it a waste because it outright does not work at all, or is it a waste because you could get much much more from a smaller quantity by eating it?

It's stronger eaten imo so you need less, but also smoking (vapourising actually) opium is a difficult process and most people waste post of their opium using it in that way

Raw opium does not burn like hash, by itself, it's difficult to properly vaporize it. It can be done (mix powdered raw opium with tobacco or cannabis) and it works, but eating is much better.

Man I haven't seen raw opium since the 90's, would freaking love some. Anybody ever try to make it, plant the flowers then make slits on the bulb or wherever? Had some friends in high school who planted some and collected what oozed out of the cuts and claimed they got buzz but I never pesonally tried theirs. What do u think they, just thought they felt something or can u by just planting ur own like they did?

Yes, you can produce your own pretty easily.
