SMOKING is HARDER to stop than HEROIN!?!?!?!?!

I think cigarettes are comparably addictive to heroin. I used to smoke around 50 cigarettes per day. I then went on the nicotine gum, I now have been chewing the gum for over 12 years. I chew through over 3 packets of 105 pieces per week. I've ALWAYS got a nicorette in my mouth except when eating. I often wake up once or twice in the night craving them, chew one for 20 mins or so then go back to sleep. When I smoked I used to wake up 2-3 times a night for a cig, then go back to sleep.

I've been using opiates for a while (Oxycontin) and I don't personally find them addictive at ALL.

I also think significant alcoholism is worst than heroin addiction, as well as more addictive (in severe cases). I also think smoking is worst for your health than PURE heroin. The main problems with heroin are impurity, and inaccurate or uneducated dosing.

i strongly agree, of course, heroin is a pretty benign substance, especially in its pure form with no adulterants.

I find that ridiculous. During heroin WD, I am incredibly irritated, legs feel like they are constantly aching and clenching and flexing, my eyes water, constant yawning, nausea, not to mention the fact Im mentally jonesing for a hit of H soo bad. I have smoked on and off for the past 7 years. I was pack a day. Tapered down to 1 cig a day w/o much trouble or being very uncomfprtable. Going from 1 a day to none a day was the hardest, but one day I just realized that I had gone to bed and woke up the next morning, and I hadnt had a cig the day before. I didnt smoke for about 18 months after that. I cant imagine heroin ever bein that easy to quit

My Opinion

First off, I think both are extremely hard to quit. I've been a smoker for 6 years and have tried many times, the best being 1 year out of the past 7 years without cigs.

A) Heroin definitely has hard withdrawals, and is way more painful to quit than cigs, no questions asked. Cigs don't cause pain, they just make you angry when you don't have them.

B) Both are extremely psychologically addicting, however Heroin is physically addicting as well. People may argue that cigs are physically addicting, but they aren't.

C) C stands for my conclusion, I think Heroin is harder to get off of than cigs.

Yes, you have social factors, heroin isn't acceptable, cigs are (in some places), you can get cigs anywhere, you can't get heroin everywhere. I just think that because H has both physical & psychological addictions associated with it, it is that much harder to quit.

If someone thinks they get sick from not smoking a Cig, well, they may have cancer. That was a little joke, hopefully you get it.

the withdrawlz from heroin would b much worse and the pleasure from it iz much greater then cigarettes so heroin should b much harder 2 stop using 4 sum1 who wants 2.i think smoking should b more socially acceptable lol, theyve propagandized against it 2 much.

Never smoked H, but up until Jan 08 I was smoking 50 cigs a day. I quit using a new tablet called Champix. It stops nicotine getting to the brain apparently. All I know is that after being on it approx 3 weeks I just stubbed out a cigarette half smoked and chucked the rest of the packet in the bin. Never smoked since and don't get any cravings, not after meals, sex, nuthin. Only drawback is the tablets can make you feel really sick, but take travel sickness tablets and that sorts it out. On a personal note, I LOVED the dreams I got with these things. Technicolour full-on extravaganzas!!! Really missed them when I stopped taking the tablets. Joking aside, I have no will power and had tried everything. Patches, lozenges, inhalators, the lot, and I can honestly, really say that I have never had a single craving for a cig (I keep wanting to say 'a fag' 'cause that's what we call em 'oop North', but all the Americans on here whould be going 'Uh, whaaaaat????"LOL)since I smoked y last one on 1st Jan 08, and no, it wasn't a resolution, I don't hold with them, it just happened that that was the day the pills kicked in. Hope that helps someone? p.s. no, these aren't the crappy Zyban tablets that were supposed to stop you smoking a few years back. They were crap and these are totally different.

I never had a problem with tobacco...shit is nasty. I know it's harder to quit than heroin though, because I've met plenty of people who quit heroin, but still continued to smoke cigarettes (despite the fact that tobacco has no euphoria IMO whatsoever).

Quitting heroin isn't harder than tobacco, it's different though.

You sound like such a dumb shit.

its harder to quit dope, but its harder to stay quit with cigs

I would have to agree with that logically...i never been addicted to either (ive enjoyed OC a few times but never really craved it and ive smoked cigarettes [one a day] for a few weeks but i couldnt stand the taste)

Anyways i would think with dope the withdrawls would be more of a reason to stay quit, because you know if you shoot again you may again have to experiance that hell so that may help someone stay clean.

Again this is just an outsiders opinion

i guess it depends on the person if this is PURELY psychological were talking. cause ive never seen a smoker vomiting and crying in horrible agony because of the pain in their intestines and the liquid shit flying out of his asshole every time he so much as sneezes from ciggarette withcrawal. anyone who has gone through opiate withdrawal can attest. ( IT BLOWS)

Clearly people are basing the majority of their arguments on the fact that heroin withdrawal is much worse than nicotine withdrawal. The stats MAY show that that individual smokers are less likely to succeed in quitting per attempt (many of which are admittedly half assed) when compared to quit attempts of heroin (which when "official" and not just 'This is my last bangup'), are probably going to weigh in favor of opioid addicts.

Just go to any AA/NA meeting and you'll see many in recovery who still smoke like maniacs despite conquering every other addiction they had.

The PAIN of WD is not directly equal to the % of those who go substance free. Going cold turkey off of dope is obscenely hard compared to nicotine WD but this is all based on stats....for better or for worse.

that's a tough one.

I cant say I've ever tried herion, but I did used to smoke. I can think of argunments for both:

Heroin: physically and psychologically harder to quit than smoking.
Might be more motivated to quit than smoking because of the huge and immediate impact it has on your life.

Smoking: Quitting caused physical discomfort, but you don't get sick. Psychologically it is difficult, but not as difficult as herion. Might quit because of health reasons or pressure from family. Easier to use everyday because of lower price and higher avaiablilty.

In the end, I don't know. I'd probably say its harder to quit heroin. I think more people who abuse heroin end up quiting than those who smoke, but if the same number of smokers tried to quit, I think it would be easier for them.

My expierence with quitting is that it was difficult, but doable. I got in the habit of eating a ton tho to deal with cravings (I only recently quit) and thats something I have to cut or I will be the size of a cow in a few monthes.

I thought a lot about this question over the last few days and have been formulating another response in that time that I think might help those who doubt that smoking is harder to stay away from than heroin understand why people like me think this.

Point 1: look at how each drug effects a person's life. We'll do it in question and answer form.

Which drug would you be more likely to spend $100 dollars or more a week on?
Heroin
Which drug would you be more likely to steal for? Heroin
Which drug has the worst physical withdrawal? Heroin
Which drug causes problems with friends and family? Heroin
Which drug would you be more likely to lose a job because of? Heroin
Which drug would you be more likely to go to jail for? Heroin
Which drug has the greater ability to consume all aspects of your life? Heroin

Now, you may say, "Well obviously heroin addiction is worse!" Of course it is. And then you'll say, "Look! You said it yourself. The physical withdrawal from heroin is worse!" Of course it is.

My point by that is, yes, heroin is worse, but who would want to have to go through all that again after already going through it, quitting, and fixing it? Obviously heroin is a worse addiction overall compared to smoking, so would you be more likely, after quitting both heroin and smoking, to go back to the drug that takes over and ruins your life, or the one that is just an annoying habit to break?

AND DON'T SAY THAT SINCE PHYSICAL WITHDRAWAL IS WORSE THAT HEROIN IS HARDER TO QUIT. I've said it till I was blue in the face (keys) that withdrawal is not the only aspect of quitting. When I say quit, I mean quit doing it and never do it again.

Point 2: Health issues.

IIRC, A lot of people were arguing that the health issues related to smoking would be enough motivation to not pick the habit back up and that heroin is relatively harmless, thus the health issue not being a reason to not use again.

I don't quite believe this. As humans, we tend to not recognize things we can't see. Which of the following is the more likely scenario?

Person A is a heavy smoker. Every time he takes a hit of a cigarette, he thinks to himself, "Damn, even more damage to my lungs."

Person B does heroin. Every time he sticks a needle in his arm, he thinks to himself, "Damn, these track marks are bad," or, "I hope I don't miss so I don't get an abscess."

I'd go with Person B being the more likely to occur.

We don't see the damage to our organs from smoking, but the damage done from heroin is right in our faces every day.

Point 3: What's easier to go back to?

This comes back to the accessibility argument. Which of the two would be easier to go get if you all of a sudden had a craving for both? I guarantee anyone who smokes and does heroin, if they don't have cigarettes, they stop to get them on their way to get heroin, so it would work the same way in someone who quit. You will probably pass at least 20 party stores and 30 gas stations on your way to get the dope.

even jesus cant help laughin at that statement.

Aaandd...Everyones struggle is their own, but im curious where you got your theory of alcoholism being more addictive and worse than shooting up heroin......I guess thats another story for another thread tho huh....

As far as bein on topic.....I dont know....I really believe that heroin is still harder to stop....Personally for me the idea of never smoking a cigarette again is way more doable than never doing dope again...My struggle with dope is that i been doing it so long and so often that EVERYTHIGN reminds me of dope. The way you say that cig smokers get constant reminders, well for me heroin reminders are constant becuz every single totally normal random boring thing reminds me of doin dope becuz i did/do it all the time and have shot up so many places, been high everywhere just about, with every person, at everybodys house that I know, at every job i ever been at....

when i watch every show on TV. Shit, even every fucking commercial reminds me either A-of heroin, becuz i am usually high when i watch tv late at night and they show the same 6 commercials over and over at that time, so i think, hey everytime i see this commercial I am high and then it makes me feen, or B- becuz i was up late cuz i was withdrawling and couldnt sleep, so the commercial reminds me of being dopesick, and how shitty i felt and how i couldnt sleep, and then it reminds me of dope even if i am clean becuz i get a flashback withdrawl kind of feeling and remember that the last time i seen that commercial i was thinking, wow i wish i had a shot right now, so either way i cant win its just a constant thing in my face. I could go on and on. my point is that for me, literally EVERY and ANYTHING is a 'trigger' for a craving for heroin for me so it makes it that much harder its a 24 7 obsession. but to make me want to have a newport, its only eating a meal, doing a drug, having sex, or waking up/going to bed are really times that i think of smoking and have a definate craving.

LOL Lacey, I think that may be the funniest response to any post there has ever been.

Sixpartseven wrapped it up nicely - I smoke about a pack a day, and I'm a recovering Heroin addict. I would almost always, without question, be willing to throw my life away for a bunch of Heroin. However, you could offer me a lifetime supply of my favorite cigarettes and I wouldn't be willing to do anything very crazy to get it.

Yeah in my opinion Smoking is way harder to quit then heroin (may not be the same for other people) im addicted to heroin IV and ciggerettes and have tried to quit both many of times. Ive successfully quit heroin and stayed sober for about two months before getting back into it. But i was puffing away at my ciggs the whole time. Ive tried using patches, gum and sunflower seeds but the most ive gone without a ciggerette is about two days. It is extremely hard. And i was surfing the web and came up on a study they did on rats, they got some rats addicted to nicotine and others on diacetylmorphine (Heroin). They then starved both addicted rats until they were in starvation mode. Then they introduced the food back into there enviroment and the heroin addicted rats chose the food over the heroin. But the nicotine addicted rats chose the nicotine until they died of starvation. Pretty crazy stuff.
