But I don't get it, if you already are using the best method, why would you just use another method to "try something new?" I thought the purpose was efficiency, as you paid for your shit, and tin foil is the most efficient method for smoking.
Also, I'm not quite sure what you're getting at? The idea is for it to burn off slowly, so you can catch all of the smoke, if it burned faster, you'd be losing alot. You want the H to barely simmer, and SLOWLY smoke, it is best to take your time. Many people hold the lighter WAY too close to the foil, a good way to tell how far it should be is to get the flame up, and slowly move it towards the H until it is barely burning. That is the distance you should always have, you just want it to slightly simmer, not be burning away all quick. Something else you want to do is make the pieces you put on as round as possible, makes them burn more equally. You never want to "flatten it out" as you described, for the reason I already stated.
Stick to foil, there is a reason everyone else does who smokes. (Me included, I don't, and never will fuck with needles.)
