What is up with this? i'm looking for a job and thought there could be some lame data entry or what ever shit job on the internet to see whats out there and saw this on the nbn web sites that they drug testing you "subject to pre-employment and on-going drug and alcohol testing" and your job is not handling any machinery at all, that's fucked up in so many ways not gona start, but just gona say is this with all government jobs? i know mining jobs you get drug tested. I guess its just quit drugs if you want the job so bad. but sucks for the peps who did what eva to get positive drug result days before test, and not get a big job ! i'm sure lot of other threads and talk about this workplace drug testing shit. i had it at school!!! farrrk i left soon after i stopped rocking up most fucked shit like want to be any more over powering?!?!?!?! :? lol

from the bottom of all the NBN job aplication sites,

"NBN Co is committed to the well being of its employees and contractors and to enabling work to be performed in a productive manner that does not jeopardise one's own safety or the safety of others. Employment with NBN Co is subject to pre-employment and on-going drug and alcohol testing."

also what about the people who need that job to be able to find that motivation they need to stop if they really want to. i'm sure if someone took you on knowing its gona be a difficult 2 months or what evs but after that you have a worker who i guess who be stocked and the person who hired was a worker! :) does that ever happen?

yeah, drug testing that picks up cannabis is especially evil IMO.

It's so wrong that you can be legally discriminated against because you smoke pot on your own time.

I think this is the kind of thing that trade unions should fight to protect us from, being effected by drugs at work is completely different to smoking pot on your own time. This effects so many workers world wide and I would be supportive of industrial action, or rally/protests through capital cities because it's simply unfair and causes a lot of innocent people to suffer.

I believe pot is an important drug for a lot of people who often find it lessens the amount of alcohol they drink after work. I know this is true for a lot of men for who excess alcohol consumption is usually the norm. For a lot of people cannabis probably helps them greatly to stay on a regular after work regiment of a good dinner and a good nights sleep, with minimal booze. I think it probably helps a lot of people to reduce the amount of occasions they come into work hung over and or sleep deprived which has to be a better situation safety wise.

I have noticed all the pro pot shows that have been on national geographic lately. I think these are grate pro pot propaganda, shows like American Weed I think it's called that and there have been a few others about medical pot in the USA. I hope the amount of this kind of pro pot propaganda increases and helps to make more Australians angry about this violation of human rights. It's insanity, it's like we are fighting and persecuting our fellow citizens for a rather benign plant. The average aussie needs to get angry about this stuff because we are all at risk with this insane crap we all seem to put up with.

to my knowledge, drug testing isn't that common in australia.
not as common as the united states, for example. if it is compulsory in government jobs, this is the first i've heard of it.
i have never been drug tested, and i have a good job in an institution that is funded by the federal government...

keep looking man, you'll find something that doesn't force some ridiculous piss-test agenda on you.
i think once you find something that does drug tests, make a note of it and stay the hell away - for your own safety/reputation/sanity as well as the principle. mandatory workplace drug testing is fucking unethical, except in a minority of cases (people operating heavy machinery and the like).
good luck, i hope you find something good!

edit - good post sonny jim, i totally agree. didn't see this before i posted this comment.

i would like to add, in light of this - anyone who takes their rights at work seriously needs to take this into account before you EVER vote for the shitbag liberal party. they're a bunch of cunts.

yeah absolutely i would walk about from the drug testing shit. When you are at work its fair enough employer can get pissed off and fire you if they want if they catch you doing naughty drugs at work, end of the day they can't dictate what you do when you at home lol really suppressive attitude if they try. hopefully a union would be helpful but who knows. one would probs just walk away coz its kinda obvious if u refuse to do it.. and most ppl imo are apathetic to that shit... "oh i don't take drugs so i don't care that my liberties are being taken away ill come out negative so ill piss in a cup" this type ignorance gets up my goat.
sex part-ay all the way they seem to have the most practical approach to drugs in my opinion.

yeah those weed docos on nat geo are good as haha some nice weed poen indeed. Cheers Spacejunk, i'm hoping so

drug testing seems to push people into using more dangerous drugs than they otherwise would. not just alcohol, as sonny jim mentioned, but retail-packaged research chems such as synthetic cannibanoids - and methamphetamine - seem to be particularly popular in this country amongst workers who are regularly drug tested (especially those in the mining industry). meth leaves people's systems a lot quicker than weed, and a lot of the more obscure drugs are not tested for. i've known people that stick to the better-known, but not-tested-for drugs (LSD and DMT specifically) but this isn't necessarily everyone's bag. the whole thing is utter bullshit, because cannabis seems to be the easiest thing to detect in urine tests (for a really long time) but is probably one of the drugs least likely to affect work performance when used occasionally.

maybe it would be worth thinking about the industries that have strong unions and aiming for something within those? maybe not the easiest approach, but it seems like drug testing in australia is most common in occupations that have more collective bargaining. not sure if this is the case, or just my perception...but either way - all the best!

Im just curiuous, why are drug testings carried out at work? Is it done for the employer to know if the employee is under the influence during work hours or is it done to determine if he/she uses drugs in general in THEIR own time at home? Lets face it, at least 1/5 people use drugs often and more than half have tried it some day in the past.

I know of a lot of people who have used / or are using who are professionals in there field at work and they are no different than the people who dont use anything at all. I really think that this is breaching your freedom somewhat. Its just as silly as the mandatory blood test that is done when a vehicle accident happens. Example: A car cuts you off and because of that you hit another car, you are completely not at fault. Get taken in for a mandatory blood test and come up positive because you indulged in your favorite substance few days ago (insert drug here), then coming back as positive and failing the drug test are arrested and blamed for the entire thing even though you were very sober during the time it happened and were NOT at fault but guess what? In the end who's fault was it? Pfft thats my 5 cent rant lol

I was under the impression the NBN service would be sold to various ISP companies, not working for the government directly, so you would have to undergo whatever tests the ISP providing the NBN deems necessary, i could be wrong though...

so .... Police may face on-the-spot drug tests
"The NSW government is being urged to pass legislative amendments that would allow police officers suspected of illicit drug use to be subject to on-the-spot testing." http://news.ninemsn.com.au/national/8495979/police-may-face-on-the-spot-drug-tests
sucks for the good police in NSW... no care for the fucked cops.

is this just normalizing drug testing in the workplace even more?

i wonder what type of jobs are destined to be drug tested in the future... i hope something can stop this becoming becoming more of an issue. i can also imagine being a boss and drug testing all your employes to be quite expensive for them. i see teachers in schools being drug tested :/ they have a strong union tho that would stand up and stop drug testing in the industry and others will see they could do the same if there smart about it.
