Hi folks. Am a newbie. Looking for right sleep meds. Was on surmontil for 30 yrs and had great/normal sleep. Drug discontinued last November. There is no similar drug. Have had little sleep since stopping surmontil. Coped ok for first 6 mths but now lack of sleep is affecting my health , job and relationship. And of corse, mood. Feeling depressed and shakey most of time. Taking pristique 50 mg for possible depression. Seems ok. Does not help sleep. Have tried endep and melatonin. Getting worse all the time. Figured sleep would sort itself out once surmontil was out of system. Am trying all the natural stuff. Eating for sleep, getting enough sunlight, exercising, routine, right lighting , reading instead of TV , etc, etc. Tried natural stuff. Different oils, kava, camomile tea, valerian. Still getting worse. Have been taking pan forte and Valium for last 13 yrs after back surgery/accident. Am managing that ok with less meds every year. Think I need something maybe every few days as a catch up until I can get some proper normal sleep. Or a med that will give me sleep without too many side effects. Have a good doc, seeing him this week. He said it can be hard , to find the right med. Would like to have something in mind before I see him. Too some degree, I have found self diagnosis can be useful. Worked with my back pain. Guess I will end up at a sleep clinic. Looking for a short term fix. Thoughts anyone.......? An antidepressant that helps sleep would be good. . M?

Have you tried mirtazapine? Not sure how it stacks up against Surmontil as Surmontil maybe unique among the TCAs for insomnia but it (mirtazapine) is quite useful for sleep.

Welcome to BL :)

Since surmontil is a tricyclic antidepressant, other TCAs or 1st gen antihistamines should work for you. I am on 20mg doxepin (was on 30mg), and it works pretty well. Tell your doctor you'd like to try a TCA and/or an antihistamine.

Thanks for the info guys. Surprised this site actually works. All good suggestions. Saw doc recently cause it took some time for my log-in to work so am currently trying temazepam 10 mg at night. Only been 2 days - sleep different not sure if better. Will up it to 20 mg after 3rd night to see what that's like (as per doc ). I asked for a referral to a physic doc too as their the drug experts. Would like to be a little more stable (sleep please!!!) before I see him. Otherwise may seem a bit "fruity". Also some how think long term pan forte may be doing odd things to my thinking process. Without doubt I am addicted to it but hard to manage pain without it. I can cut down and then have a "back attack". Hard to know whether it's my body saying " gimme the codine" or if I REALLY need it. Life always intervenes and in the end I am back on the old dose. Stay tuned...............,.,

Well I would stay away from ambient just because of my experience but all drugs do affect everybody different. Ambien helped me fall right to sleep but it made me have really messed up dreams that fucked with me. So I wouldn't look at ambien to being your first pick for a new sleep med.
