Sleep Issues - Opinions

Hey guys,

Chronic sleep issues, mostly stress related... I won't go into details but I have heavy charges. I've turned into a night owl, waking up between 3-11pm and sleeping around 9am when the light hurts my eyes. I've tried so hard to stay awake but I'm dieting and refuse to go ahead with my old ways of chronic caffeine use.

It should also be noted that I'm on home detention, and a part of that means I can't really leave the house unless otherwise booked. (stressful in its self, and terrible when you sleep through the little time you get to go out).

My doctor has had me on xanax and valium, I was taking between 0.5 and 1mg of xanax at around 8-9pm and easily asleep by 11pm. I also had this medication for any 'bad days' as it was on a prn/take as needed basis. Thanks to a shitty psychiatrist who wrote back to my GP and recommended I be taken off all medication I'm now suffering, mainly due to my incorrectable sleep pattern.

Another condition of this bail is that I take medication as prescribed, or otherwise legally available and then only in the doses prescribed or listed on the box.

I'm not doctor shopping! No way. Have pretty much given up on docs because It's a hell of a lot of effort on home detention (even moreso with my sleep issues), especially to be given a short term 25 pack of temazepam(if i'm lucky) where 8 will barely touch my sleep issues for a night.

I can easily get benzos, however I am drug tested by corrections and do NOT want to go back to jail. I have no intention of breaking my bail for any reason, spend 3 weeks with a murderer and tell me you would go back, heh.

Down to the point, I'm going to go to the chemist at some point this week and get what I can to help me sleep, I was thinking the following (oh, and don't worry I'll get it in 1 purchase... :) :

1x Box (50?) Polaramine 2mg (Dexchlorpheniramine)
1x Box (50) Phenergan 25mg (Promethazine) - My old favourite
1x Bottle (20?) Restavit 50mg (Doxylamine)
1x Valerian Extract (any good guys? Comments?)
1x Box Zantac (30) - 150mg Ranitidine
1x Nurofen Plus/codeine 12.8mg (x30)
1x Paracetemol/codeine 10mg (x40)

From my understanding as these are all OTC medications, my questions turn to harm reduction and your success with any of these meds. Of course I'll not take more than 45mg or so codeine at a time.

The Australian drug testing standards seem to dictate the following chemicals are screened for: THC, Cocaine, Amphetamines, Opiates, Benzodiazepines (and it seems possible barbiturates and methadone specifically can/are tested for... But hey I'm no corrections worker).

Thoughts? Of course this isn't a cocktail to take at once, I do want thoughts on valerian, polaramine and restavit mainly, and any issues cycling through these meds?

Cheers

Sorry for the long post ;)

codeine is an opioid so itll probably show up on the test , plus 45mg of codeine is a waste of time ... unless ur trying to stop ur grazed knee hurting ? im a regular codeine user , use about 200mg if u want any opiate effects from codeine , but if u want it for sleep just use a bit like 100-150mg , plus promethazine and doxylamine , id be pretty surprised if that didnt put u to sleep .

if ur not looking to get high (i cant comprehend why) , just munch on doxylamine untill u sleep lol should only need 50-75mg , same with promethazine , 75mg should have u sleeping . i dont kno anything about the rest .

dont get the paracetamol/codeine , paracetamol sucks , nurofen plus is pretty crap too , get panefen plus its the way to go , the codeine/ibuprofen pills , theres a new brand of codeine pills 'mydol' which sell 40 x 15mg tablets , so u wont have to go back to the chemist as much .

yesterday i had 1.5mg alprazolam , 25mg doxylamine , and 4mg loperamide , i would also suggest trying loperamide , at higher doses (20-30mg) it acts like an opiate , some people even reporting euphoria .

home detention = great fun, huh? i'm right there with ya.

found any decent outlets to occupy your time apart from the mundane everyday activities? exercise and being out in the garden got my sleeping pattern sorted a few months back - i've been delaying it for no good reason apart from being lazy, medicated or not.

I tried Valerian and it may have worked for 2 nights or so, unless it was acting as a placebo, then I got absolutely nothing out of it at all. Phenergan works well for me, but I only use it occasionally.

I'm pretty sure codeine will show up in drug tests, as it metabolizes into morphine. When I was getting urine tested for my methadone, I was told using panadeine forte or nurofen plus would come back as a positive on their tests.

Usually alcohol is my go to medication for sleep, not sure if that's an option, and I usually overdo it and write some things I probably shouldn't on various internet message boards plus feel like shit the next day.

Okay I'll cross Valerian off then, not worth the money clearly!

I'm sure when they were screening you for methadone they would be doing a seperate test as this is not something standard they test for (as listed in the australian standards) Methadone urine testing is seperate.

Alcohol is not an option, unfortunately. I've had 6+ random breath tests.

Not really, I'm an IT guy, my home d guy is alright but he wakes me up every time he comes over for a welfare check. heh.

I keep sleeping through my exercise passes, and I'm 130+kg so I've cut right back on eating, NO sugar, NO caffeine. Working out as I did in gaol is good to tire me but not enough to put me to sleep.

I can tell you I know all about codeine, believe me :) - Me saying paracetamol/nurofen plus was just because not everyone knows the brands. N+ is something others identify with. 45mg wont show up on a GCMS test, I'm positive, maybe with chronic use. They would be screening me for 6-MAM and morphine, oxycodone, hydrocodone, etc.

It takes me 300mg promethazine to sleep soundly. :/ I legally can't take this dose as the highest promethazine dose as indicated on the box for sedation is 75mg.

Loperamide I've also had but not in doses of over 6mg. I'd also be cautious of taking super high doses of it, due to its mechanism of action.

I told the urine test guy that I was on panadeine over the counter (I broke my big toe), he didn't seem to think this would trip the test. Urine went straight in the fridge too.

haha thats fucked man , just mix it up i spose , or go to the doctor ? yeah im a bit sus about copping bad constipation from loperamide lol , but theres heaps of reports of it being pretty awsome at 25-30mg doses .

Doctor knows of my drug use, said I need to keep off everything for a while. Screw that my quality of life is suffering. Doctor automatically assumes drug use as I'm hitting the bong while slamming a speedball and plugging mdma pills at the same time, I'm sure.....

I'm thinking a mix of the 3 antihistamines and the zantac to potentiate/inhibit CYP450 3D6, maybe grapefruit juice on top. Small dose of course!

The doctor put me on zyprexa for a period but I hated it, life on xanax was 1 million times more tolerable. I might ask (again) for seroquel and see if he's willing to prescribe that for the purpose of sleep.

I cut a line up of loperamide from gastro-stop capsules. Tiny caps but easily still 100mg of powder, not fun. Ah the things you do when you're bored.

I'll probably buy loperamide I guess, I used to always keep a box around just incase. It's not something you want to rush to the chemist to get.. !

Don't know much about it and never tried but Phenibut is a legal supplement for sleeping/relaxation, apparently a friend comared it to lorazepam so maybe give that a go. I've tried all the herb extracts (valerian, passionflower etc.) they were all crap even in big doses. Codiene seems to keep me awake, Restavit works well but tolerance can build pretty quick and I wouldn't recomend it for everyday use. Promethazine didn't do much for me either.

Yeah promethazine has always been my favourite, mainly because I used it to potentiate codeine/opiates back in the day. It became common to have a box around the house, hell even as a straight antihistamine. But it's not quite strong enough to put me to sleep.

The polaramine (dexchlorpheniramine) 2mg, I found 8-10mg still, much the same like 75-100mg promethazine.

Restavit I only had in gaol, doctor there said It was herbal (do they even make a herbal version? heh).... Small orange/tan tablet with "10" on it, round in shape. I was supposed to only get it for 3 nights but it ended up with 4, and on the 5th night I got 4 tablets labeled neuroactil or something similar... Not sure what that was but it definitely put me to sleep, not after giving me restless leg syndrome though.

Doc also said they smoke stilnox in gaol, which is why she wouldn't prescribe it. I'm not sure why you'd want to smoke stilnox but I guess people are desperate for a high, life is boring in there.

Mirtazapine (Avanza) mostly markered as an anti-depressant is supposedly a very potent anti-histamine and is great for insomnia. I've been on it for over a month and it's worked great, a lot better then all the other anti-histamines I've tried for sleeping but yeah you'd need a GP script for that. I'm sure most GP's would be happy to put you on it though.

I was on mirtazapine, that was the first thing my GP put me on, straight out of gaol.
I'm 132kg (was 150 when on mirtazapine) and found it's appetite stimulant properties way too strong for my liking. I put on heaps of weight, all the weight I'd lost by putting in a lot of hard work.

I'm fasting now, ;) Since the mirtazapine I've been eating as little as possible, hope to go for a 30 day fast at some point in the future.

I'm off mirtazapine as per the psych's fucked recommendation.
