Sleep - If nicotine is a stimulant, then a downer....

From the half-assed research ive done on nicotine, along with my general knowledge about it...

Nicotine is a short stimulant, then a downer right? its the initial spike from the stimulant that gives you that feel good feeling, then the downer when you feel kind of depressed.

So why is it that taking a dip (like i do), or smoking a cigarette before bed shown to be a problem in sleeping disorders? Yeah its a stimulant, but for what? 5 minutes? then a long lasting calm, depressing, or sedative state occurs for far longer when your blood pressure drops. (if im *assuming correctly)
*assuming based on the on the spot and lack of research ive done

With my theory as it stands, why wouldn't it actually HELP you sleep better?
I myself dont have a problem taking a dip from my can 30 min before bed time and it actually seems that it sedates me more and generally helps me sleep more sound.

I could be way off but id rather post to my fellow BL's than on yahoo answers or webmd where they could be (and usually are) brainwashed by the government and anti-tobacco doctors. I could be wrong on this one but it seems logical from my point of view.
Enlighten me!
 
it wont help you sleep because any level of stimulation before bed is bad. also ive never heard of this depressant effect youre talking about. and depressants dont make you sad/depressed, they lower the speed at which bodily functions occur.
 
The pharmacology of nicotine is quite complicated. I've read very long research papers on the pharmakinetics and cology of nicotine. Theres so many different factors that play into the effects of nicotine in the body. Effects can differ greatly just based on the dose of nicotine being taken and how fast the dose of nicotine enters the body.

I would go more into on how certain high and low dosages and the rate of absorbtion equals X effects or Y effects but its late and im tired.
