Television Six Feet Under

Looking back to the wedding last season, now I do think the seagull on the wedding cake was an omen to Nate that his marriage was not going to be happily ever after.

Also, remember a few episodes back that opened with a man choking to death (or something) in a theater? Wasn't he at a performance of Chekhov's The Seagull? :\

Yeah I know. . lol. . to be honest. . I don't think I am as hardcore of a fan as you. My mom watched it for a long time, and I just finally started watching it about a season or two ago. . .hopefully it will go into sindication tho. . . but where would it go? It's so. . naughty . .LOL

Anyways. .lol

SFU, edited for regular TV? With commercials and everything? I can't bear the thought of it!

^^there is no fucking way thats happening! they could have easily churned out a few more half-assed seasons but the creators have a commitment to not exploit the characters and story they've created in favor of revenue, pretty refreshing actually....

i got to catch up on the last 2 episodes last night *thank you on demand* and im still in shock. i sorta figured nate would have some complications but i figured it would be later in the season and i sure as hell wasn't expecting it after he came out of the coma. i can only imagine the drama that ensues when ruth gets back to LA only to find her son dead:(

i have mixed feelings on nate. i wouldn't go so far as to call him wholly selfish though. a lot of nate's actions are selfless but totally smack of some self-richeous bullshit which i guess in the long run is just the same as selfishness. examples: he stayed in LA at the beginning of season 1 to reconnect and support the family and the business he originally turned his back on. this imo is an example of nate the martyr.

same deal with marrying lisa. he got her pregnant while in a *then* committed relationship and then when things go south w/ brenda he suddenly becomes nate the good guy again.

lisa's burial imo was the ultimate example. a lot of my friends still enamoured with that move but i still find it to be monstrously unethical and moreover selfish and a perfect example of nate and his hero complex...

i've literally never been this into a television show and im gonna be sad to see it go:(

*hums theme song*

[edit]
toddy~ i dont think brenda has ever been that naive. i think it was obvious to her that nate was unfaithful. more than likely, brenda will hold it together better than any of the others. im expecting big things from ruth and clair in the grieving department...

as for the gull, i had always just assumed that it was intended to represent lisa given the show's penchant for having dead characters following the goings on of their mortal lives. if im not mistaken i think there was a dream sequence earlier in that episode w/ nate and lisa or lisa and brenda.

^^I agree with you on the issue of Nate's selfishness. The poor guy couldn't win. Throughout the series he tried to do what he thought was the right thing in alot of instances (coming back to the family business, taking responsibility for his child in a sticky situation) and he gets lambasted for not going for what he really wanted...and yet on those occasions when he tried to go for what he really wanted, he gets lambasted for being selfish (as we saw in his final confrontation with Brenda).

I guess the point is somebody's gonna get hurt, either yourself or someone else, no matter what you do.

I'm not saying Brenda is so naive as to conclude he didn't cheat, but there will always be that doubt given that there was no confession (I'm bettin' Quaker girl's gonna clam up), and it's my guess that she'll be highly irrational now so it's possible that she's gonna replay Nate's final words in her mind over and over again and beat herself up over it.

Watch Nate's final convo with her again and remove the certainty that he cheated from your mind...see if you don't think his words can be interpreted as eerily foreboding of his death.

So now Brenda is officially Maya's parent...if the series were actually going to continue I could see a huge fight developing between her and the Fishers.

There was an afterlife sequence involving Lisa in that episode, but I only recall it involving a confrontation between her and Brenda. Given the look of consternation on Nate's face that they portrayed when he saw the gull on the cake, I still can't help thinking the gull was meant to represent an omen of something.

only 2 episodes left

that was probably one of my favorite episodes of all 5 seasons. this show never lets me down. those characters who i thought would hold up the best, fared the worst and vice versa. im not gonna lay out any spoilers till i know that all of the regulars in this thread have seen the episode but i will take this time to tell toddy that i was right about brenda;)

do yourself a favor and if you havent seen it, make that happen

^^You were right, she didn't, although I doubt we've seen the last of her going off the deep end given the way she jetted at the end of last night's episode, setting up the big Maya custody fight. And Nate lit in on her almost immediately upon leaving the burial. ;)

You gotta hand it to the writers, they've been doing a helluva job the last two seasons. Best written show on TV atm, imo.

You gotta love that they can throw in the little stuff like the sex video disclosure as Keith was dropping off the boytoy. Little touches like that really add great texture.

George really stepped up to the plate last night. Gotta wonder if he hasn't redeemed himself in Ruth's eyes...I'm guessin' he has, or at least eventually would have if the series continued.

Boooooo. Agreed, I didn't wanna see them run the series into the ground, but I still want more. This sucks. :(

^sucks, its on demand at 12 am a few hours after the show airs...

gb what'd you think about maggie being present @ the funeral... seemed outta place to me.

WOW what a great episode! nates burial was one of the most beautiful scenes of all 5 seasons. I really liked the part when ruth shoveled the dirt in nates grave. Reminded me of the first season at Nate Sr.'s burial when ruth throws the dirt into the grave with her bare hands...

Two episodes left I can't wait!!!!

I can't believe Maggie had the nerve to go to the burial. After all, she wasn't invited (even though George was, by Ruth). I loved Brenda's reaction to her showing up on her doorstep ... I wonder what she did with the quiche. ;)

I thought George's little speech at the funeral was touching but he sounded a bit too familiar for someone who, in my opinion, didn't know Nate all that well ("Nate was an idealist .... and he struggled his whole life"). Come on, now.

Billy's back! What will happen between Billy and Claire now? And who will Maya end up with? The saga continues ...

Ahhh! The new episode was awesome. What does anyone think of when Brenda was giving birth, and she saw Nate? A good or bad sign for the baby? Is he there to "take" the baby, or to protect it? Does anyone else think that David will just lose it altogether and kill himself? Also. . Brenda's dream. . wow I just about died when her and Billy kissed in the dream! Oh, and I thought for sure Claire was gonna die in the crash . . .oh dear. . it's the end!!
