Marcia Wallace has passed away at the age of 70.

Details of her death are not yet known but it is believed she died in her Los Angeles home with her family around her. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in the mid-80s.

The actress starred in over 170 episodes of The Simpsons since it began in 1990 as Bart Simpson’s coarse and hilarious fourth-grade teacher Edna Krabappel. She won an Emmy Award in 1992 for her voiceover work on the show.

Yeardley Smith, who voices Lisa Simpsons in the hit cartoon series, posted her condolences for Marcia on her Twitter page: “Cheers to hilarious, kind, fab Marcia Wallace, who's taken her leave of us. Heaven's now a much funnier place b/c of you.”

The Simpsons’ executive producer Al Jean added: "I was tremendously saddened to learn this morning of the passing of the brilliant and gracious Marcia Wallace.

"She was beloved by all at The Simpsons, and we intend to retire her irreplaceable character."

As well as her work on The Simpsons, Marcia appeared on hit TV shows such as Murder, She Wrote, The Bob Newhart Show and ALF.

If she did more voices than the teacher maybe. Eventually someone major who does like 20 voices is going to die and they won't be able to continue.

Aw man, genuinely thought she was great. Not properly watched The Simpsons in years but always loved her character.

I don't have Sky1.
