Silk Road: the online drug marketplace that officials seem powerless to stop

^ when they turn the coins into cash through mtgox, the cash is deposited into a bank, no? It's not some kind of anonymous western union... Well it is, but when the currency is changed into cash somebody gets the cash and that can be monitored.

Bottom line as long as banks are cashing in, silk road will thrive.

The Bank Barclays Pingit App allows the purchase of bitcoins, I dont know though the banks will do whatever for money. Its only when the goverment gets involved and tells them to close specific accounts they will, hence why MTGOX stopped letting people in the UK getting coins, they though if they cant get coins then they cant get drugs, and a new gang (Barclays) just took its place %)

It's only a matter of time before Silk Road is busted just like any other illegal endeavor that reaches a critical mass in size for a long enough period of time.

Nah. SR is pretty safe. Like I said previously, Internet drug trafficking has been going on for a long time. As CH also said, the powers that be are powerless to stop it. There aren't enough government employees in the US to individually check international mail package by package. Really tho, the US government could probably give 0 shits about people getting a couple grams of this and that here and there.

You don't have to use banks to get bitcoins. There's a variety of ways. I used to go through BitInstand and do a deposit through TrustCash that then went into my MtGox account. All you had to do was bring the cash to a list of banks provided. So it was anonymous because you don't need an account at a bank to make a deposit into someone else's account. BitInstant no longer uses that method though so I now do it via MoneyGram. Unfortunately, you have to provide your name, address, etc to do so. I'm not concerned about getting into any legal trouble though.

Actuallly, Silk Road is my main source of stuff. I no longer have a local contact and goods on Silk Road are usually half the cost of local goods.. It's risky because of the reliability of USPS, purchasing from sellers you are unfamiliar with, your account(s) used for bitcoins being hacked, etc. But I have never had a problem so far and am quite pleased with the service.

I find it pretty fascinating how the internet has changed even the way people obtain illegal drugs. Deep web is quite interesting too. Intriguing stuff.

ETA: I guess this is kind of self incriminating. I hope there aren't any rules against it...

An article I read was saying they thought the only way SR would get done would be for the cops to stumble apon the servers if they were raiding for something else and trace it all back to the people who run it (if they could).

It is, but when there are articles being posted about it, it's not really us mentioning the source, it's a news source mentioning the source, and we are just discussing the news article.

loopholes ftw

Not exactly. It's because there's a site-wide exception made for SR. Usually articles mentioning a source are either excluded or redacted (though redaction is pointless).

Lol, you make it sound like a black market nuke about to go thermonuclear.

Anyways - I must say, I am surprised at the length of time in which SR has remained online and ready to serve. I too keep on waiting for that eventual front page news article dubbed, "Silk Road busted". Not that I hope it's gonna happen. I simply think that it is inevitable. That being said, all they'd be doing is cutting off the (in this case big) head of a hydra. And it will grow back rather quickly. And after 40 years and $1,000,000,000,000 spent by the U.S. gov on this "war" you'd think they'd notice by now that demand will always yield supply, always always.

Also, I have to agree - partly - with what one of the JDs stated in the article, in that "Silk Road can be viewed a site for connoisseurs: an easy way to track down better quality – not cheap – drugs." As it is somewhat of a community, it may be easier to track down the scammers who are selling bunk, and so forth.

Lastly, what is this, the 3rd article about SR by the guardian since SR opened up? Other than the obvious free advertising, I'm beginning to think that James Ball and company are big fans.

Thank god lol

One of my uncles in his late fifties used to get sheets posted from friends around the world 35 years ago, nothing new

Gold, great story! Plus you have a cool family, good genes for head-travelling you got there Lol

Is isn't it? I'm also facinated by the emergence of the Bitcoin phenomena & by this currency huge increase in value & it's complete independence from any authority, government etc

If there's a revolution coming for us Psychonauts, it's starting right here on the old interneterwebs!

Pretty crazy how much the value of a bitcoin has risen in the past year or so. I remember when my pet goldfish was paying roughly $5 each. Now he's a little depressed that he didn't buy a bunch and hold onto them for a year.

The packages are still being scanned by customs. and There is a chance you will not receive your "delivery". And there is a chance being busted.
If you have a dealer IRL, dont even bother to order from there, its game in a russian roulette.

I'd be a nervous wreck the whole time waiting for it to come in the mail, considering that the police wait for you to receive the package before kicking in your door! It would definitely be a federal charge in the US and it would definitely carry a mandatory 2-3 years at least on even a first offense!
