sick of being sick: immune boosting help

I hope the don't eat meat thing is a joke...doesn't make much sense to me, especially since unless you properly change your diet to make up for the lack of meat you can get sick from doing so...

I'd recommend just a balanced diet and exercise. Try not to binge eat. Eat on a regular basis, HAVE breakfast! Don't skip any meals. Try to be eating something every 3-4 hours at least, even if it's just a snack. Smaller more frequent meals are healthier, provided you don't over eat during these meals. Cut down on sugar, fried foods, and processed foods. Especially avoid white bread and pasta or keep it in moderation. Instead opt for whole wheat bread and whole wheat pasta.

Make sure you are getting enough healthy fats (EFAs or essential fatty acids). This is HUGE. So many people neglect this and it is a neccessity. People think fat = bad but you need the right type of fats. It's all about a BALANCED diet...no fads. Supplement your diet by eating fish a couple times per week. While mercury in the fish could be a worry, if you only eat it a couple times per week you should be fine. Some fish have higher risks of mercury (do more reading about this if you'd like). You could also just supplement with fish oil tablets. I usually take them twice per day at slightly higher than the recommended dosage. I could go on and on about the benefits of EFAs, better skin, heart health, mood, etc. Just trust me on that one.

As you said eat plenty of fruits and veggies. Supplement with a good multivitamin to cover your bases. If you'd like me to recommend one I'd be happy to do so.

In terms of exercise I recommend weight training along with cardiovascular activity. Weights 3-5 days per week along with 3-6 days of cardio...depending on your goals. If you'd like help setting up a program I'd be more than happy to help you, I've been weight lifting for many years.

The sleep thing, as you mentioned, is huge.

Be happy. Do what makes you happy that is healthy. Keep rec drugs to minimum. For alcohol consumption I would say limit it to only 1 or 2 days per week in moderation. This really will make a huge difference (will help improve your aesthetic appearance as well). I know you may not what to do this...but you said you wanted to stop getting sick. You can always go back to drinking more if you feel it is essential to your happiness....but I think you'll be surprised if you put effort into it.

When I said be happy, that means pursuing your interests. If you don't have any I suggest trying some out. Reading, music, movies, exercise, sports are all great healthy way to improve yourself. I find that with exercise and reading I always get a sense of accomplishment. Even if my week was shitty if I went to the gym 5 times...or read a book, I know that I've bettered myself at least. Choose books that are enjoyable and stimulate your mind...but don't start out too tough or you will be discouraged. Save up money for awesome vacations....this always helps me feel better, because I'm working towards that amazing vacation.

I'm not just talking out of my ass...when I was younger I was FREQUENTLY sick. I mean every year I'd get pneumonia and the flu on top of bad asthma, allergies and a slight immune deficiency. My senior year of highschool I missed over 60 days of school. At one point I was absent for almost 3 weeks straight (went in 1 of the days and had to leave early because I still wasn't well). For me the exercise and eating right made the biggest difference. Along with not blazing and boozing as much. Once you get healthy you can slowly re-introduce the herb and booze and whatever else if you'd like....but until then I'd concentrate on a healthy lifestyle.

Hope this helps

quick question on garlic, i notice that y'all said "raw" garlic....are you saying the same curative properties aren't in cooked?? or is it just not "as good" ?? just curious.

I drink aloe vera gel & it does wonders for the immunity - while everyone around me are dropping like flies I just carry on whistling......needs to be taken consistently every day then benefits in almost everything are seen after about 6 weeks. worth it imo

i sadly have to report that i have become sick again.......sorethroat, flu symptoms etc. Even worse when i had my only smoke for the week (on Friday night) the next day i was sick!

I"ve been following the plan however and granted i do feel a bit better when i've eaten up with the fruit and supplements but this is fucked (pardon my french).

I haven't however eaten the garlic. I suspect i'm going to be eating a lot of garlic tonight when i get home from work

I wanted to ask though what do you guys think about normal black tea? (like a blend such as earl grey)

Is it alright, i know its got caffine but i don't consume any caffine (i don't drink softdrinks or coffee, or even chocolate for that matter) and i figure the caffine in it (30-4mg) is pretty small to be inconsequential to anything. But back to the questions do you guys see any benefit to drinking tea?

by the way thanks mcbane and all the rest for the tips. Eating right is something that is big on my agenda. I've been trying to eat a lot of fish and move from buying staples to buying fresh vegie/fruits and other foods on a daily basis from the local fruit & vegie shop.

Cooking garlic changes the phytochemicals it contains, which are thought responsible for garlic's healing properties.

Also, minced garlic is no good because the phytochemicals are destroyed in the stomach.

My method is to put a clove in my mouth, crush is lightly with my teeth (so I can swallow it), and gulp it down with some orange juice or water. Remember to eat it with a bannana or potatoes because this makes it much more effective.

Chug :sorry to here you're sick again. Feel better soon dude :)

Goji Juice. Immune System Booster?

Has anyone tried this? A guy at work told me I should drink it to boost my immune system. It sells for $35/bottle. He apparently sells it to a group of women I work with. This lot has more problems than a bottle of juice could cure. I figure it was some Shaklee or Amway pitch, so I never gave it much thought...until now.

A friend of mine swears by it. I tried a swig of it once, but not enough to really notice a difference...
