Shulgin on Catalyst Thu 25, ABC 8pm

^^^ Rosencavelier, absolutely we want to legalise MDMA for it’s therapeutic significance. I think it was in Dr Holland’s book I read the analogy that MDMA is a “vitamin for the soul” (if not, I’m sorry I know I read it somewhere). That really stood out to me because that is basically how I see it.

I don’t see myself as having any psychological or psychiatric problems, yet the benefit I’ve gained in relationships, self confidence, and overall well being that I attribute to Ecstasy over the last four years is indeed significant. Of course the therapeutic significance to people with genuine psychological or psychiatric problems can’t be underestimated. Sorry this is all a bit O/T.

As for the program, given that it was only a ten minute slot I thought it was quite good. Yes it could have been longer, but the positive thing is that the segment was not the usual media crap. At least people who either don’t know much about MDMA or have only ever heard the usual media b.s. are now given some decent information.

Finally, I was glad to see the interview with Dr Julie Holland because I have just finished reading her book ‘Ecstasy: The Complete Guide’.

I am an idiot!

I don't believe it but somehow I managed to miss taping this after all!!!! I feel pretty damn silly right now!

Sounds like it was good. If anyone who knows me (or not) and taped it can lend it to me for a day or two I would be extremely grateful!!!

Ummm, yes?

I said that with a fair bit of tongue in cheek, but really.. (obviously just IMO) the vast majority of people on BL aren't using MDMA to get over PTSD or for any other condition or disorder that they may be likely to have it (MDMA) prescribed for, were it legal.. they're using it recreationally.

Okay. Re-reading, I can see that my comment may have been taken to mean that we don't want MDMA legalised at all... I meant that our (the BL community.. or at least the majority of it - once again IMO) reason for wanting it legal is for recreational purposes.

Sure, I fully agree that it has quite significant power in a therapeutic environment, but that's not the (main) reason I want it to be legal.

I loved the fact that the DEA referred them to NIDA and vice versa, showed them up for what they are. I wonder if this [no government statement] has anything to do with the recent retraction of the MDMA study by John Hopkins...

I can imagine it goes like this:

"The australian media are here to talk about mdma possibly being used for therapudic uses"

"Hmm where's that study about how bad MDMA is for you?"

"uh, that was retracted"

[insert deadly "your about to lose your job" silence]

"Send them to the DEA"

Whoops, good work george, you really fucked us now!

And yes, we do want MDMA legalised for therapudic uses. I personally believe it could work wonders in people about to divorce or couples with marital troubles... :)

Rosencavelier – I know that your comment was a bit tongue in cheek, but it is still a valid point. What I was trying to say was that through recreational use I have gained therapeutic value, despite not having any psychological or psychiatric problems.

Like I said “vitamins for the soul”.

i was amazed at how lucid and "with-it" shulgin was. most 78 yr olds i know are barely able to get out of their rocking chair and string 2 words together, but he was speaking fluidly and very intelligently... i'm impressed! :)
who said drug use makes you scattered? only excessive drug use does that! shulgin is the perfect advocate for responsible drug use!

Mudomia - I don't disagree with you at all - I've also had many positives out of MDMA, besides a good party and a night of pure bliss. I've worked out difficult issues with my partner, opened up to friends (and vice-versa), broken through social fears, etc, but if it is legalised for therapy it would be limited to extreme cases, and certainly not for recreational users.

I guess what I'm saying is that my primary reason for wanting MDMA legalised is not for therapy, but to make it safer* - no more PMA sold as E, known dosages, a little packet with an insert listing contraindications, etc.

I'm certainly not saying that it isn't a great reason, but I do doubt that it is the main reason most people on BL would like to see it made legal.

*Edit: safer for recreational users.

Despite some very minor shortcomings I thought this was an excellent news item. I have emailed Catalyst to express my appreciation of their effort. I hope that others who saw it would do the same.
It's all well and good to whinge when the media misrepresents drugs but it should be our goal to encourage informed, objective journalism on this topic. If we aren't heard over the cacophany of dissenters then we will be trodden on.

Rosencavelier, I have 30Mb of webspace available. But I feel a little aprehensive about giving you my ISP Username/password ;). I could host it if sent it to me through MSN Messenger.

nickthecheese > if you thinks that is bad... you should see what Rick Strassman had to go thru do get his permits to perform the clinical DMT trials a few years back.

I think what it comes down to is that no department wants to be the one held responsible if/when the shit hits the fan (read: there is a public outcry: "wont someone think of the children!!")...

but to be fuckin honest doesn't that apply to everything/everyone in todays society :(
