I was browsing pihkal today and came across a paragraph dealing with synthetic thc analogues. The passage reads as follows...

"...wandering around a camp ground and mixing an extract of some of the coloured scabs flicked off a big rock rock with some orange peels from the nearest garbage can, in the presence of phosphorus oxychloride ... you could produce a potentially psychoactive smoke."

Is this over simplified?
Can anyone shed any light on the specific lichens he is referring to? Are they a family that would produce a variety of different (presumably) psychoactive compounds, or would it be one specific lichen?
Has anyone ever tried this reaction and sampled the resulting compound?

this is highly oversimplified,
most lichens do not contain olivetol, most contain orcinol and a few related compounds, similar to the compounds in litmus. even in the ones that do contain olivetol contain small amounts and a lot of other junk.
phosphorus oxychloride is hardly readily available, and is dangerously reactive and toxic.

it is a shulgin pipedream
 
Bah, for a second there I got excited, I got out my pen knife, rang my rather unscrupulous chemical dealer and ate my own bodyweight in oranges. I think the fact that my nasal passages were full of MMQ at the time might of contributed to the delusion.
 
This passage is not meant to be taken literally. Sasha was merely exercising poetic metaphor to illustrate the point that nature abounds in potentially psychoactive compounds with a help from a little synthetic chemistry.

For example, read the passage about the spice cabinet psychedelic amphetamines or the tma-6 from phloroglucinol in apple trees passage.

I like the big ones, they're exactly like cooking crack. If you snort the white powder on them you'll get a better high than the crack ever made.

If I could only get the 5x Jet-Puff, I'd be in heaven.

Yeah, I think this is similar to his "take the essential oil, add ammonia, and you'll get the corresponding amphetamine" in PiHKAL.
 
From what I understand, the first 100 copies of PIHKAL came with a magic wand that made everything work...

You know it's an intense peak when the universe divides by zero. You need to expose the Jet-Puffs to high vacuum till they condense into a translucent solid; a highly purified, potent derivative of the Jet-Puff. Local law enforcement are calling it "gummy".

you must have got the collectors editions which came with free hot chicks.

everyone with an interest should have a copy of PIHKAL and TIHKAL, the great thing is that they are both exactly the same size so are very handy for propping things up, though they should have a more durable cover than the current paperback.
 
Another personal favorite of mine goes something like the following:

"Not much is know regarding the activity of 3,4,5-trimethylamphetamine except that it is very hard on cats."
