Be warned, I've seen a lot of people writing that mushroom hunting and IDing cannot be done safely by inexperienced people with some light internet reading and/or a 'mycological encylopaedia'.
At the very least you need to know the ins and outs of species determination and practice a lot by observing, using a microscope and trying to classify. You better plan to do that for a good while, like multiple seasons, before you eat anything you pick.
Of course you could be educated by someone else who is already experienced but good luck with that.
Apart from warning you I concur that you should visit The Shroomery, it really seems to be the best source for info and wisdom from experienced people, who can tell very well what you should and should not do. Listen to the superusers there. Perhaps there are ways to go about this other than what I said, I'm not such an expert although I have cultivated mushrooms and experimented with the cultivation.
