Back in the day it was my intention to "practice" tripping properly in order to try to make some sense of what was going on.
It didn't work.
Basiacally once you that EGO loss point...things become increasingly dififcicult to manage from ther. Reality is gone and you have had the entire thing planned out to be aware through the whole experience....but when it comes down to it your brain is drugged and it's not functionally in a good state.
I'm not saying practice may help...but help what really? Just enjoy the experience while it lasts. Though it's wonderful when they do, the trush of the matter is that what you take away from a drug experience can be very interesting...however we live in physical material world where pertty much none of those things come to use.
To 'practice' means for me to
1) Develop healthy, sensible usage (if 4g is too much of a trip for you to get anything useful out of it, instead of trying again, lower the dose by .5 or 1g) and avoid taking mushrooms whenever your tolerance is gone. I've found my trips are a great deal more meaningful with space. When I was new at all this, I would take an eighth every weekend. This made things become very shallow very quickly, not to say that the fungus didn't rock my shit, it just didn't teach me anything. It's important to realize that mushrooms aren't the best substance to just take when you want to get high.
2) Make a point to spend a day or so integrating the experience, reflecting and thinking about what has just occurred, the spaces you just entered, the things you have just moved through. It's your responsibility to learn from your experiences, fungus induced or otherwise.
3) Enjoy various sets and settings, but make sure they are all conducive to good feelings. This seems obvious in part, but I feel that a lot of people just worry about whether their set/setting are 'good' or not, rather than the overall quality of their set and setting. You may feel equally at home in a beautiful meadow with your significant other, in a soft-lit room with good friends, or otherwise, and these may be 'good' settings, but there is more to it than that. The nature of the set will find it's way into your trip, and your emotional state, all of the things that have happened to you, all the things you think about or have been moving through you will become apparent at some point or another. Just because you're in a good mood doesn't mean you're in a good set, and honestly, I have tripped in a bad mood that I felt was a good set. Mind you, it was a bad mood brought on by stagnation in my life. I took the time one-on-one to reflect with a friend, and we talked and planned ways for both of us to move on.
In summary, there is a lot to take into consideration, but in the end only you can make the decision. My personal recommendation for you is 3g, but that is mine, and what you decide is what you decide.
Good luck, friend.
